road trippin

i'm hitting the road tomorrow for a 12 hr drive home for thanksgiving. my staples used to be beef jerkey, mountain dew, and cigarettes. i dont drink caffeine or smoke anymore so staying awake / non-bored might be a bit more trying. i'm thinking about DL'ing some comedy albums, making a few mixes, maybe DLing some watmm dj mixes. what else is fun on a solo road trip? rest area glory hole hunting? taking loads of meth and listening to NPR? hanging your penis out of your fly so that truckers who look over into your lane as you pass catch a glimpse? audio books (instant sleep)? i'm definitely looking forward to eating some shitty fast food to prime myself for some real home cookin. i'm lookin at you, mcrib.

I read your first item as "beef jerking". LOL.

Seriously though - no caffeine? Boooooorrrrrrring. Just bring loads of music, and make sure you either got a good mix or the shuffle on your media device of choice (make sure you bring a USB-to cigarette lighter charger) is decent. You'll be OK.

Guest Adjective

I've heard good things about This American Life

The whole concept of the show seems suited for traveling. i think you have to pay for archived episodes but the current one is free, that's an hour's worth of entertainment at least.

pirate some albums with a lot of replies in the releases subforum so you can bump them later with the appropriate thumb

jerking it

corn nuts. oh and mcdonald's is the best place to use the bathroom. you must get all your food at convenience stores and truck stops, though.

Be warned though - Ira Glass' voice (host of TAL) is so monotone and soothing, it may induce sleep (I usually listen to TAL Saturday mornings while I run errands)

for road tripping: a 12 hour trip will require two hits of fairly moderate strength LSD. You might need some orange juice or beer to mellow out when shit gets crazy.

A joint on the come down is nice.

Plus 3 or 4 packs of american spirits.

You goin it alone?

I like to find a cool roadside attraction or a great stop on Roadfood for a fun meal on the way.

If I'm not driving alone, I like being the passenger and reading books aloud in my best James Lipton voice.

i used to drive a ton and would get by on beef jerky to keep me awake (the chewing) and various podcasts. the recommended podcast thread here might be a good place to look if you haven't already (here and here). i like adam carolla and greg fitzsimmons, though carolla has been going a little downhill lately in my opinion. the early ones with andy dick are gold.

Two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls

I always like to start solo rode trips with silence. Just drive out of your comfortable surroundings before starting to think you're on the road. Then once outside of the city limits, play a few albums you haven't listened to in awhile or mix in something new. I usually like to have a smoke every half hour or so to keep me going. Rolling down the window is great. After awhile, trying switching to some AM station. Talk radio can be soothing. Are you bringing a laptop? Monitor open + passenger seat = jerkoffs

Did the edmonton-vancouver trip a few times under these circumstances. Nothing like coming out of the rockies tripping balls and having the country just open up in front of you, lazily gliding down the Coquihalla highway with some Orb accompanying the sunrise.

never did it alone though....
