Ceephax & Squarepusher: Exploring the Jenkinsons

Hey guys,

Before I start I'd like to first of all state that I am a big Squarepusher fan, but for the past few years I have honestly found myself becoming increasingly disappointed with his music. I recently wrote an article on how I feel about this @ http://myredhotphilosophy.blogspot.com/2010/11/ceephax-squarepusher-exploring.html

Let us know what ya think and whether or not you agree or disagree. Please do keep in mind that this is not an attack on Squarepusher. It is more of a personal response to his more recent albums.

Cheers,

Owlwink.

I think Squarepusher is skilled and talented enough to do any style he wants when he wants to do it.

Ok you may not like it this time round but rest assured next time it will be very different and they'll be plenty of 'next times' to come.

you cant make typical 170BPM glitched out IDM forever as its a bit of a cliché these days

I just feel that after Ultravisitor he has been in this 'next times' space. That was 6 years ago, so I'm just hoping that this return to form does eventually come as I'm not really digging the direction he is going. He has the potential (obviously) I just don't want it to be a situation were the industry chews him up and spits him out.

I agree with you on the cliché point though. I just wish he could find a happy middleground...

Squarepusher is losing it, can't deny that, as for Ceephax I liked his earlier work more, before he started using just Roland drum-machines for drums.

I think the decline of Squarepusher has been much more general and obvious.

A thread for one persons opinion about how much Squarepusher has gotten shit, in the Squarepusher forum :trashbear:

It is unfortunate that a majority of threads in the subforums are based on personal opinion at the moment. Often not much else to talk about I guess.

I stated my case in the original post. Just wondering what people think of his recent progressions. Not trolling on it, merely saying the older stuff is better.

Welcome to the discussion...

I find it pretty funny that you join an electronic music forum, and literally the 1st thing you do is post how shit Squarepusher is, in the Squarepusher forum.

Is this why you joined?

It's WAY more than just one person's opinion.

Just because we don't like his new style doesn't mean we want him to make Hard Normal Daddy and Go Plastic over and over again for the rest of his career, which is a stupid assumption. He's proven that he can do such a diverse array of styles, that we're just really disappointed he landed on something as stupid as Shobaleader. The musical landscape is chock full of kitschy, "ironic" retro music at the moment. The novelty on that wore off a long ass time ago and it's just obnoxious now. Do we really need it from Squarepusher? Clearly not. Yeah, he's the artist and he can do what he wants. But I don't feel like I have to defend him if I think it's retarded.

He's one of my favorite musicians, though. I hope he snaps out of it.

I agree.

After Ultravisitor, his music has just never reached the same crazy heights for me (except for Numbers Lucent). JAS was poor in comparison.

Yes that, I was thinking of Exidy Tours which is my favorite record from Ceephax, Psychtapolis too, the old tracks at least like Turrican II.

If its concept had been properly realised, the Shobaleader One project could have been really cool. A bunch of metal kids get together to jam with the legendary Mr. Jenkinson to create a slinky, pumping, mind-bending, funky metal-r'n'b-jam hybrid?

The same with Just a Souvenir. What Squarepusher did to 2-step with 'My Red Hot Car', he could have done to prog jazz.

I know this is about taste, etc. etc. - but it seems quite obvious that in the sound/production department at least, Squarepusher's stuff has really dropped in quality from Hello Everything onwards. Those of us disappointed in his new stuff do NOT just want him to do d'n'b-IDM-glitch forever. Of course he should expand and explore, and I'm just as big a fan of 'Music is a Rotted One Note' as I am 'Go Plastic', so this isn't about wanting him to repeat Go Plastic umpteen times. I just want quality realisations of interesting musical ideas. It seems the more eloquent and interesting he's got at talking about music, the more insipid and daft he's got in the sonic department.

I think JAS is great, it has a lot of details and you can listen to the songs over and over without geting tired of them. On the contrary I got tired of Shobaleader with only a few listens, I think it's the first Squarepusher I don't like. Let's see what he does next.

"if not he is running the risk of shifting from the niche into the banal or even worse, becoming a mainstream puppet that casts out all integrity in favour of a fat paycheck."

that's not an opinion, more like smart-ass talk.

Wow, this has got to be like, the first time ever that someone believes a long-established pioneering musician has become derivative and uninspired of late.
