This is a picture of me, when I was 13, after getting Pantera's autographs at an in-store signing of the newly released "Far Beyond Driven".

I was lucky enough to see them play 3 or 4 times.

Great fucking band. So sad.

Fucking cool!

I think Pantera doesn't count as "new metal".

To me, they are the tail end of the real shit. Few bands have come after them that are even close to the real deal. They had it all.

btw...

They went downhill after Far Beyond Driven though, some good songs on TGST but after that it was horribe. I saw them live in 2001 and it fucking sucked. Especially live, all the tempos were slowed down, Phil was drunk, overwheight and couldn't sing. I was kind of smiling ironically and made eye contact with Phil, who started to look at me with a tough guy look, saying nothing, the audience waiting and kept sustaining the eye contact until I realized the guy, knowing his past (he was previously one my teenage heroes) was about to come off the stage and beat the shit out of me if I didnt look away. There were "FUQ EUROPE" stickers on their flight cases too. Well, rednecks.

i heard that wasnt true. supposedly when it happened the music was so loud that nobody could have possibly heard someone yell something as specific as "you killed pantera". so the guy was either completely insane or a government mind control victim. either way, just trajic. i think i saw that there is a video of it on youtube, id like to know what happened, but im not going to watch it...

They should increase security in music concerts.

Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano admitted yesterday that body scanners would eventually find their way into U.S. public transportation, trains and boats, but Big Sis is already beta-testing technology that goes even further, by forcing Americans to undergo a behavioral interrogation before they are allowed to enter sports events, rock concerts and shopping malls.

Fucking weird. I never heard anything they put out after FBD. I think that was when I transitioned into raverness.

I definitely saw them in their prime and it was something special. The first time was on the VDOP tour with Sepultura. I'll never forget it. We got there late and missed Sepultura. It was by far the largest mosh pit I've ever seen at a show. It literally took over the entire venue. I remember as we entered, there was a kid being carried out with huge, deep gashes across his face (and through an eye) from getting "spiked". It was before they started banning spikes and chains at concerts.

I was like "what the fuck am I about to participate in?".

I remember, in those days at least, a Pantera show was like a rogue state in which pot was legal. People used to throw bags of grass on stage and the band would throw it back at the crowd. Always tons of doobage at a Pantera show. I think at one point they even had a smoking, 5 foot long joint prop they used to bring out. Good times.

No kidding, must have been awesome. Vulgar display revolutionized metal. Phil Anselmo = best metal singer ever.

I remember watching the Pantera 3 home video the 1st time I tripped on Acid. I saw them with white zombie back in the day, although I forget what year off the top. My Pantera days were good days indeed, although looking up to them as a tween and teen probably fucked me up in a bad way :/

i saw him with damageplan 2 or 3 nights before his murder. my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) met him right after that show. pantera has been her favorite band forever. she called my crying a couple nights later saying he was shot in the head on stage. i still have trouble visualizing what that must have been like at the concert.

we have a beautiful photo she took of him that night framed on our living room wall.

RIP.

That was a seriously HEAVY tour... One of the greatest in hard music history Imo...

Right up their with The Clash Of Titans Tour...

Pantera really struck a chord with people... From what I've seen, slower heavy music tends to bring out the deep fear/aggression in people...

One of my friends in high school saw pantera right before VDP came out. The next day he whipped out a sewing needle and ink and gave himself a tattoo that read "BY DEAMONS" on his arm.

Long live DBD

I mean the night we saw damageplan a few days before he was shot. not the night of his murder. I will post it tomorrow anyway.
