Is MAX/MSP worth the price?

Is MAX/MSP worth the price? I downloaded the demo and have been fooling around with it and it seems very powerful, but is it really worth the $600 price tag? I am a college student so I can probably get an educational discount, but it will most likely still be fairly pricely. Could any experienced users weigh in on this subject? Thanks

i think it's most definitely worth the price, especially when you upgrade to Jitter as well then the program basically becomes twice as powerful. It all really depends on what you want to do with it. What are your goals musically with max/msp? For some people programs like Reaktor work much better for them for similar goals, other people choose to go the freeware route with programs like PD or Buzz (which are similar to max/msp but their own flavor)

Looks complicated and that it might take a lot of study just to make a basic sound.

Or someone could just tell me its easy and I believe them, Ive no idea about the programme.

I'd go with SuperCollider instead because it's better, and it is free.

Edit: If you can get a student discount it really is a titload cheaper, so it might be worth it.

But seriously, SC really is the way forward.

Try comparing it to PD and related software before you buy.

yeah agreed, and i wouldn't advise un using a crack if you want it for the Mac, the PC crack seems to work pretty well though, so if you have windows give it a test run for a while and see if it's worth it to you to support Cycling74.

Supercollider is free but i personally find it far less intuitive than Reaktor or Max/msp, ,for some people i'm sure it's a better fit. I know a couple who swear by it.

Yeah check out PD(same shit basically), and Buzz is definitely not even in the same category besides having modular effects routing and mixing.

you're right it's not similar to max/msp, but it does have similarities to reaktor and plogue. sorry if i was confusing earlier, i meant to say that if you're not really sure why you want to use max/msp you might to want to check out some easier to use programs that can get you to the same end result
