Meshuggah, hell yes.

Devin Townsend, HELL YES.

I can't wait for him to release Deconstruction and Ghost.

I'm interested to see how Deconstruction turns out, but I was not into Ki and the other one are terrible.

And @Greg, yeah Fredrik's stuff is so good it's unfair to most metal artists. Can't wait to hear his new one. Hopefully comes out next year.

High On Fire are my favorite metal band.

Celtic Frost's tune & the cover by High On Fire (HOF's version is better, IMO)

YES... The only death metal album I still own... Chuck is an extremely soulful guitar player...

I don't care much for Chuck's lead playing, James Murphy pretty much owns him all over this album.

I'm sorry PSM or should I say PCP... It's obvious your still living in your parents basement poorly analyzing old death metal albums...

For one... Theirs just no merit to your statement... Both these guys are generally considered legends in extreme metal guitar... to say James "Owns" Chuck Shouldiner is way out there...

If James is so great why is he playing in Chuck's band?

Chuck wrote 77% of the guitar this album... It's widely known James was just a hired gun here...

Please go back and review this album again... Chuck is brilliant with his signature style... James is brilliant playing chucks riffs...

Blablabla.

I posted the damn song because I love the album!

And I was not talking about the riffing. It was the word "soulful" I responded to. And I only think that term applies to lead guitar work in this genre. Chuck's lead guitar playing is rather stiff and harsh, while Murphy's is fluent and dynamic. And have you not noticed the "dueling" aspect of having two lead guitarists alternate back to back. A competitive comparison is not misplaced.

Sorry to break your heart, but that's how I have felt since I bought the album back in 1990.

"I posted the damn song because I love the album! " - Noted...

"And I was not talking about the riffing. It was the word "soulful" I responded to." - You should have made that clear... Chuck probably wrote the leads for the songs he's given credit for writing... As their clearly he's style...

"Chuck's lead guitar playing is rather stiff and harsh, while Murphy's is fluent and dynamic." - Yes I like his unusually mechanical/progressive/melodic style but I wouldn't call it stiff... As for harsh, it lends itself well to death metal. If anything you could call Jame's style "Stale" with it's standard blues feel...

"And have you not noticed the "dueling" aspect of having two lead guitarists alternate back to back. A competitive comparison is not misplaced." - Comparisons are fine here... You just went to far with yours imo... Chuck is technically as good or better than Murphy...

I pray our hearts will heal quickly from this important discussion...

I said "lead playing" in the first case.

They both have solos on all tracks, it's specified in the lyric sheet who plays which leads. Do you actually know who plays which leads?

Generally - when you use hired guns and are in a position to pick the cream of the crop within a given genre I think there is a risk of being outshined. Specifically - in the case of Death and lead guitars, I think Chuck is outshined by of Murphy, Masvidal and LaRoque.

Still, that does not retract any from my regard of Death, Chuck or his music. To me he was a great player, a great writer and a great band leader who assembled some legendary musicians to realize his vision.

Now, back to enjoying the music. :music:

textures are another great band. they build on meshuggah's style to include more melodic stuff:

when the keyboards come in, so gorgeous. really great to hear a technical metal band using ambience. their keyboard player has some great solo ambience sections in their albums too.
