Boc Maxima

This early BoC album has been leaked to the internet. In spite of the alleged fact that there are only 50 copies in existence, it has managed to beat the older Music70 albums (Acid Memories, Hooper Bay) to filesharing programs even though the aformentioned older albums allegedly had higher print runs. That's kinda odd isn't it.

Does anyone remember when BoC Maxima mp3s started to appear on the internet, or more specifically, does anyone have any information on who might have been responsible for them getting there in the first place?

Apologies in advance if this topic has already been beat to death, but I haven't been able to find this info anywhere.

Firstly it's not odd that BOC Maxima has leaked when the older demos did not because BOC Maxima was distributed to sundry music industry types. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's the demo SKAM heard. AFAIK The older tapes were only distributed to friends and family.

Secondly it's highly unlikely that anyone is going to own up to leaking them.

As mentioned before, BoC Maxima was a demo tape they were shopping around to different labels. I have one of the original cassettes (just a standard, handwritten cassette with homemade insert in colour). I purchased it quite some time ago.

The story that I've heard (and granted it's just a story until BoC themselves confirm it) is someone at SKAM leaked BoC Maxima by copying onto MD for a friend, who in turn decided (or people he gave copies to in turn) the internets was the best place for this music.

I have a theory that due to this, Hi Scores and MHTRTC were BoC's only SKAM output (besides the MASK tracks), and when Maxima leaked (which was around 1998-1999), BoC terminated their relationship with SKAM in favour of WARP. Mind you, that's just a theory I have - no basis for it at all.

I wish BoC would release an EP of all the unreleased tracks called BoC Minima (ha). I'd love to hear a remastered version of Whitewater, one of my fave BoC tracks and one of their best tracks ever, IMO.

JR - you've mentioned elsewhere that BoC know who leaked old tunes and that situation has been dealt with. what else can you tell us about that?

also, i'm sure their jump to Warp might also have been related to the higher exposure that comes with being on the same label as Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Autechre.

Ah, I was under the impression that it was one of the original Twoism vinyls that got them signed to SKAM as opposed to Boc Maxima.

That's really cool that you own an original copy of Maxima Joyrex. How do you keep it in good condition? I hear cassettes don't have a very good shelf life. Do you have any pictures of your rare BoC cassettes online (I think the existing pics of the Old Tunes series are yours, correct me if I'm wrong)?

The Old Tunes pics online are not mine - I haven't scanned them out of respect for BoC, same with Maxima - the Maxima cassette cover is just the famous image of Mike and Marcus with their woolies on - no text on the cover, or anything. I'll take a digital pic tonight if I remember to do so.

I keep it in good condition by not playing it and keeping it in a dark box in a climate-controlled area. I made a master recording from it when I initially got it and I periodically re-burn that CDR to keep a good version of it. I've been reading scary things about CDR life and even CD life! Oh well, it's gotta go sometime. We all do.

Twoism was a self-funded release that Mike and Marcus sold to local shops. It was released on Music70, their own label. What I wouldn't give to see/own a Twoism cassette...

Yes, I always thought that Maxima was used as a demo but the new biog on the Warp site says that Skam signed them after hearing Twoism - maybe Warp are trying to avoid Maxima becoming more well-known than it already is.

BoC speak very highly of Skam in some of their interviews so I assumed that they parted company on good terms. It makes me wonder which other labels they sent demo's to and who's got them now - maybe they all ended up in the bin! All the Maxima mp3's I've heard have the same distortion on them which implies that they all come from one source.

That distortion might be intentional - after all, this is BoC we're talking about

I thought BOC Maxima was broadcast to the radio, or something like that. That way, someone could have registered it.

personaly, i always thought BOC left skam simply because skam wasn't (and still isn't) a label equipped to handle the amount of records/media attenton/hype etc that comes with someone extraordinary like BOC. i have no idea how many copies of MHTRTC have been sold, but say it's 50,000 - that's far more than skam are capable of handling. if i had to guess how many copies of the recent team doyobi or shadow huntaz albums were pushed i wouldn't put the number any higher than 5000 (again, stab in the dark). so skam tell BOC 'look guys this is gonna be huge, we can't do this alone... who else do you want?' BOC go label shopping and get warp; warp and skam wheel and deal to release MHTRTC. obviously skam wouldn't be able to handle anything BOC released again, so i imagine some sort of deal was worked out with warp. or maybe there was no record deal with skam in the first place - skam always seemed like they could have been that way, factory records-style (no musicians had contracts with factory, the musicians all owned their own music).

that said, how much do you reckon your maxima tape would fetch on ebay? :wang:

Joyrex posted the AFOT cover shot on WATMM, presumably of his own. The track listing was first posted on WATMM by another individual (I forget who exactly) at the time the mp3s first leaked.

4 pics of OTv2 were posted on WATMM by "Prince Murat" in a now infamous thread. Three partial shots of the liner and one of the tape itself (which was a hand-labeled store-bought blank tape) which he said he owned. These shots were reposted in a eBay auction of the same tape, along with a high-res scan of the liner with a big PRINCEMURAT watermark. This auction was pulled before it could complete.

Whitewater is one of my fav tracks aswell.

The vocal samples in Whitewater and Dave (I'm a Real Traditionalist) are so perfectly placed. Really touching, along with the music it gives this sense of poignant human frailty (can't think of a better way to put it).

Anyone else feel like BoC started out with a more mature vision than they ended up with? Some of their early tracks are so touching.

Joyrex, it was nice to get a chance to see the actual cover of AFOT, I'm sure we all appreciate it. Any chance that you can take a pic of/scan Maxima like you were thinking of a few weeks back?

Are you at liberty to say where you got your various tapes, Joyrex? Not in any malicious way, just out of interest
