Sony Comes Clean: PlayStation Network Hackers Have Stolen Personal Data

A security breach in the Playstation Network by still unidentified hackers resulted in stolen personal information, Sony confirmed today.

Sony says while personal information was likely stolen they don't believe credit card numbers were and that they hope to have the Playstation Network service back up within a week.

The news comes more than nine days after the intrusion and six days after Sony shut down both the Playstation Network and Qriocity services in reaction to the breach. Sony says they've hired a "recognized security firm" to conduct a complete investigation into what happened and have taken steps to enhance security and strengthen network infrastructure.

"We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network," Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications for Sony Computer Entertainment of America, wrote on the official Playstation Blog today.

Among the possible information stolen:

* Name

* Address (city, state, zip)

* Country

* Email address

* Birthdate

* PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login and handle/PSN online ID.

"While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken," writes Seybold, "we cannot rule out the possibility."

"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained," Seybold continues.

Sony is encouraging users to be especially aware of potential phishing scams from people using email, phone calls and mail to try and extract more personal or sensitive information from you. Sony also is strongly recommending that you change you password once you're able to log back into the Playstation Network.

"To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports," Seybold wrote

"We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions."

Joyrex, please tell me you don't use the same password for your PSN account as you do for the forums...

(you probably don't, but could you confirm it before I go insane with fear?)

pretty cool shit. i hope the hackers force them to shut down the network forever.

maybe they will stop inventing games all around the internet feature, ruining classics, and go back inventing games for lonely people lying into a couch.

and less thophies addicts over the planet

nope.

just because you're lonely, and just because some people waste their lives gathering trophies doesn't mean that the system should shut down forever. that's complete crap. if being connected to the internet and having achievements ruins a game, it's the developers fault, not the platform. I've had so much fun with my best friend irl doing things that are dependent on the internet/playstation network, and losing the ability for that to happen (with anyone, not just myself and friends), and having millions of peoples personal information compromised just because of some 15 year old /b/tards with no life think it'd be fun to shut down the network, and lonely people like you are encouraging them, would be tragic.

lonely or not, i have seen videogames born, and while knowing that playing with friends is the shit for some games, i know that you're playing online with your friends cos your friend is not there with you playing. so what

you can forgot past games pathos. just submitting a record to some kind of database were the ultimate reason to play. now it's more record than play, you sad fuck.

the only good thing about having a console connected to the internet is playstation store and game updates.

I don't play online. I play with my friend, in real life, occasionally. I don't even use the multiplayer online shit ever. The Playstation network is necessary for the store and game updates, and many important in-game features that use the network, including map downloads and other community content. There's no reason to call me a sad fuck, because I have never once cared about achievements, trophies, or records once, on any platform. The play portion of the ps3 needs the network to work well.

They said the user information *might* have been compromised... doesn't mean it has, and not for everyone.

At first, it was rumoured that it was illegal homebrew that allowed hackers to get in and download whatever they wanted from PSN, for free - simple theft. However, depending on what the person(s) responsible goals were, either they wanted to create a disruption in response to the whole Geohot/hacking case (Anonymous has denied involvement), or they were going for the user data specifically - in that case, they'll probably be selling that info off on the black markets.

And no, I do not use the same password for PSN as I do for the forums. No worries there. Once PSN goes back up, I'm changing my password as recommended and using pre-paid PSN cards from now on as a safety measure.

Nah man. Just 77 million accounts.

Passwords stored in plain text eh? Pretty terrible.

Oh and also:

*might* have been compromised.

Yes, *might* - out of 77 million accounts, what are the odds that you or someone you know are targeted? It all depends on what the thieves are doing with the information.

No, I'm not talking about odds. You were saying that Sony said user information might have been compromised, I'm saying it has been is all. Because PSN users are finding all of a sudden that their credit cards are being used.

Also how have you got a platinum trophy for Burnout Paradise when it's at 92%? I thought platinums were awarded when you've achieved all other trophies?
