the nigeria 70 compilations are killer and worth hunting down

Agreed. The Ghana Special off Soundwave Records is killer as well.

I've been on a huge Afrobeat/Highlife kick lately, mostly 60's/70's music from Ghana and Nigeria. Here are my favorites.

here's my favorite release from ghana, crazy drum fills on right channel for sampling:

this album from SENEGAL is also a must but it doesn't sound very traditional:

  • one of my favorite singers from Senegal, Ismael Lo, crazy synth licks:

  • feel good psy mbalax from senegal, click on title to listen to the full tape, crazy addictive fuzzy guitar solos plus deep dubby bass together with crying brass section:

a bit off topic for thread, but what are some of your favorite albums from south america?  Recently been listening to those roots of chica compilations, along with some tropicalia.. both incredible

Pretty much every cumbia/chicha band circa 70s and 80s...

Make sure you check juaneco y su combo, los shapis, los orientales de paramonga, los mirlos, los wemblers, most of them I found though the roots of chicha compilations...

One of my favorite albums is actually a compilation from a label called masstropica, from an american dude who fell in love with peruvian music. it's called el sonido de la carretera central. Another one I really like is tu y yo by los sanders de nana... :^)
