So basically, a friend of mine has entered a competition (where he had to write an essay about what was wrong with social networking, and how it should be fixed) to win 1 of 30 spots for an all expenses paid internship for 6 weeks in Singapore. http://internship2011.mycube.com/

Out of 16,000 entries, he's been shortlisted for the final two spots.

To get in, he needs you to sign up to MyCube, "which is a social network that aims to change social networking, by creating a Social Exchange, where if you wish, you can write articles and sell them". Effectively, the judges have decided to cop out, and told the shortlist-eee's that they need to prove their "marketing skills" and get 250 people to join first

What you got to do is sign up at http://beta.mycube.com/ and enter 'mcjackr' as the activation code.

Yeah, thanks for anyone who does this :p

Must say, I wasn't expecting any kind of positive response from WATMM (if that qualifies as a positive response)

BTW, for a site which makes a big song and dance about "monetizing my digital content" or what the hell ever, they have a hell of a lot to learn about marketing. I don't see them offering one tangible, plain-English benefit or incentive to join their "social network". And helping your mate get to Singapore isn't going to do it, either.

They've got some of the weakest, most jargon-filled copy I've ever seen. They don't stand a chance of winning a single customer away from Facebook, and the whole exercise is doomed to fail. Ugly site, too.

Oh hell yeah. I entirely agree. It looks plastic and shite. I don't think it has anything to offer. Talking to said friend, it would appear he agrees. But yeah, I'm not sure how much influence these 30 interns would have (whether or not they'd turn it around). But if he got in (besides being a pretty cool trip) it would kick-start his network/software engineering/programming/design/whatever computer science-he-goes-into career. I imagine he'd learn quite a lot about how technology businesses run, and how these other techy people think.
