These are awarded patents for the methods of of producing fungus that attracts insects like mind magnets, which then consumes their exoskeleton and releases enzymes that control their central nervous system.

This redirects their behavior towards finding strategically beneficial circumstances for fungal reproduction, after which the fungus keeps them still and ejects millions of spores that destroy entire localized insect colonies.

Social insects unknowingly bring the food back to their queens and feed it to her, after which the fungus eats her inside out and then consumes the rest of her colony too. :spiteful:

The present invention thus provides improved products and methods wherein the fungal mycelium acts as food and attractant and/or as an ingested or contact insecticide, palatable enough that insects will readily consume it even in the presence of competing food sources, with high recruitment of other insects among insects that exhibit such behavior. This results in multiple visits to a highly attractive (and potentially virulent) food, thereby providing numerous individual insect and/or colony vectors of inoculation.

The present invention further provides these and other advantages with improved control of insect pests using fungal compositions (mycopesticides and mycoattractants) having strong attractant properties and placing these attractant preconidial fungi in or around an object or area to be protected. The present invention also provides insecticidal foods and baits which utilize, as a toxicant, relatively innocuous and naturally occurring materials as the active agent, so as to control insects without undue effect on the ecology. Alternatively, the present invention provides attractants which can be utilized with biocontrol agents, environmentally benign biopesticides, chemical control agents including insect toxicants and pesticides, physical control agents such as mechanical and electrical devices and combinations thereof.

This should be good news for any of you worried about Monsanto and the pesticide industry.

The patent holder has no corporate interests.

I like bugs, as long as they're not infesting something I'm eating, or borrowing under my skin, or stinging me in the eyes. I'll even go out of my way to help a bug if I see it's in trouble. I've spared the lives of several caterpillars while painting this week.

It may be something to do with the fact that I once went on a caterpillar massacre when I was 5 after watching my aunt squash a couple in my driveway. I must have smushed up at least a dozen caterpillars in one go, and for three days afterward I was overcome with the worst guilt of my 5 year life. I've never deliberately killed one since. I'm a mercy killer only, mosquitoes being the sole exception to the rule. Of course I have a million gallons of blood on my hands from all the meat I continue to eat. If only animals weren't so damn delicious...

i'm with you. i try not to kill any bugs, mosquitos included. i did have to get rid of a humungous underground bee nest last year though because my roommate is allergic and a sting would likely land him in the hospital. it was like mass genocide, and i felt pretty awful about it afterward but there wasn't much else to do about it.

I've heard in the past that there is a chance that we could erradicate mosquitoes, and the void left from killing them would (in theory) be filled quickly by other organisms. If this is true, I think someone should definitely do it. Mosquitoes are serious pricks.

I'm pretty sure the void left from eradicating all americans would quickly be filled by other people. And most americans are serious pricks... :whistling:

I once witnessed a girl get stung repeatedly in the head after getting a wasp tangled in her hair. There were a lot of tears and screaming. It was pretty horrifying.

I respect bees because they will sacrifice themselves in order to stand up for themselves/their kin. Something very noble about that.

Spiders are like the sociopaths of the animal kingdom, but they are also creators of great beauty. They embody the best and worst aspects of biology.

Mosquitoes can suck a dick. Not mine please, thanks.

I always regret coming into an insect thread because they are always full of close up pictures of them and I am terribly frightened of almost every kind of insect and just seeing them freaks me the fuck out.
