Guest Sprigg Posted June 25, 2011 Share Posted June 25, 2011 I turned on my computer, and I got an error message saying that Windows encountered a 'system file mismatch error' saying something like it couldn't validate I have a legit install. Sounds kinda sketchy to me; I've had this computer for two years, and it was given to me by a friend who'd had it for a year or two before that. I'm running a scan with Avast... what could cause this though, if it isn't a virus? A Google search revealed little, also... apparently this isn't a common thing. I've heard that some programs incompatible with Vista can alter the code in memory, meaning that while the file causing the problem on the hard drive is fine, the file is modified when it's running, meaning it's read as a mismatch. It sends me to a Microsoft page that has a button that I'm 'supposed' to click to download an .exe file which will supposedly run a validation script. The whole thing sounds fishy to me.
