Back on topic... this album has really been growing on me! Repeated listens have really brought out the differences in each track and I gotta change my opinion a little bit. This is a REALLY strong release!

Whoa, dude, relax. I was giving the music a compliment. Ultimately, it doesn't matter what it sounds like - as long as I like it enough to buy it, which I did. However I don't think I'm too off the mark by making mention of one of my favorite records of all time in relation to this.

Save your energy for when the real trolls come out!

Edit: I'd also like to add that you're talking to a musician who is definitely no stranger to having "sounds just like (insert artist name)" levied against him, so I know how that feels, and even so - I would rather have people dislike what I do and be honest about it than have a bunch of disillusioned forum watchdogs yelling at any naysayers who come along. Not implying that's what you are here, but really - relax!

how do you like Set Design? Huge album for me, but could never find much about who signaldrift is or what other albums there were, and am checking out compass now. this was back in the days of not knowing where to find out about music, back when the best way i could find something was to listen to itunes radio. i miss those days. felt more innocent. i wish i could forget all i know about music press and just be consumed with a song that drifts into my life once in a while. i hate knowing.

I think Set Design is a very close second place to Compass, personally. In some ways I even see the two albums as halves of a whole.

I can relate to what you mean about the naivete in discovering new music like that...I remember the first time I heard Signaldrift...it was "Wednesday" from the Bremen EP, and I think it was because someone remarked to me about how this guy had the most fantastic tube amp bass sound. I believe that was also my introduction to the wonderful Wobblyhead label - since then I've sought out nearly everything they've produced, and then some. Even managed to score some really cool artifacts like Wobbly samplers and DJ mixes placed innocuously in Atomic Records, probably by a certain Mr. Kowalski, no doubt...

I'm definitely going to have to check that out. The first song I heard was "children of the 70's." what a beautiful track.

Also on this, I hope you're being sarcastic - Moodgadget really managed to disappoint with that Casino Versus Japan "reissue". As in, for a reissue it was basically a CD rip of the MP3s with no remaster, no bonus tracks, no physical version...just a new album cover. Perhaps Valued Customer should consider putting the CvsJ on a vinyl issue...I have a feeling something of that magnitude would make many on this forum very happy...

yeah ha. i really like that direwires-hearts in stasis album though, it's some great ambient.

This will be nice to see in the flesh when it arrives. I sprung for the deluxe edition of the vinyl because I'm a sucker for thick-ass cardstocks.

It's kinda sad that as I listen to Tycho's new album, all I can think about is Boards of Canada's current work, or more the lack of. Tycho will always be somehow attached to BOC, not that I put down his work, it's really amazing. But he's immensly attached to the group, unwilling he might be to the situation.

While BOC is a fucking lazy ass group, he keeps pushing out releases that are actual to the present representation of musicl. It's an amazing task, it doesnt feel stale, nor old, nor passé. It "is". Like BOC was before. The torch feels passed to him, yet he has no control on it because BOC could release an album tomorrow and it would be a game changer. But meanwhile, while those BOC fucktards keep being lazy arses, he actually creates art and releases it.

A fucking thousand ++++ to his guts. Keep the good work dude.

So, slagging of BoC makes Tycho's music better?

if your favorite beverage, say Dr. pepper, was unavailable to you, wouldn't you appreciate mr. pibb all the more?

The man makes a point, however I think it would be like someone listening to Don Henley only in the hopes that the Eagles would reunite, which is...pretty lame actually.

I've been listening to this a fair amount recently, and it's really growing on me. I never hated or anything upon first listen; there are some bloody lovely tracks. It's the aforementioned BoC associations that were skewering my perception of the album in its own right.

I'm past the stage of desperately wanting a new BoC release, as they've dragged their heels for so long that I'm not sure another will ever drop, regardless of the many 'it's coming' remarks that people frequently seem to drop. Dive is a lovely album, and it's BoC association only serves to enhance its loveliness. It's certainly a wonderful album to travel to, particularly at this time of the year.

For me, like Tycho and BoC, Pibb and Dr. Pepper sound/taste nothing alike, so that doesn't resolve the issue.

For once I don't really get the BoC thing with this album. Maybe it's just been so long that all the things we may have called "obvious giveaways" back in 2005, like acoustic guitars with detuned synths and slow drum machines, have simply matriculated through the current musical consciousness so much that when someone like Tycho does it now, in 2011, it feels fresh and unique to its own aesthetic.

Then again, I'll be the first to say that I haven't really listened to much BoC in a very long time and I find myself having less of a desire to. There's just too much excellent stuff elsewhere to be sitting around with my fingers in my ears in the hopes that BoC will bring me some godlike album, so my tastes have really moved on from the Boards since 2005 or so.

Anyway, still excited for this vinyl to arrive. Should be soon, right?

I think I'd pretty much agree with you. I think I said in my first post in this thread how it feels like Tycho has finally created more of his own sound with this album, so direct BoC comparisons aren't really that relevant anymore.

Whilst BoC have definitely been a massive influence on him, it is unfair for people to bash him forevermore about it. Name any musician and you can always name another group or individual who have in some way (however small) influenced their sound, so it's not like Tycho's the first person to ever take inspiration from elsewhere. Yes, his first album maybe borrowed too heavily, but he forging his own path now.

I'm really enjoying it. I think this is probably the first of his stuff where I've not heard Boards of Canada's influence massively, though it's still present.

It sounds more like Ulrich Schnauss than BoC......if US and BoC adopted a baby, they would name it Tycho. That aside, I really like these new songs!

From the stuff I've heard I'd definitely say US is much more the heavier influence. I don't hear Boards stuff at all.

the BoC comparison needs to fucking stop. Everyone here was sucking Freescha, Arovane (when he released Tides), and Bibio's dicks whenever they sounded remotely "like BoC."

agreed with US comparison.

fantards are fantards. lets drop it.
