baph
This was available as a limited 7" plus free digital download, but has probably sold out by now. Now available for download! TRACK A: Ishraqiyun "Saptarshi" In order to face East, one must know how to locate North. On this song, Ishraqiyun nails a facet of their septenary logic to the celestial pole, throwing diatonic sparks into the Cosmos. TRACK B: FORMS "Radar" An unassuming but brilliant piece by Bernard Hermann was hidden in the background during the 1951 film The Day the Earth Stood Still. Originally just piano, vibes and timpani, "Radar" now gets exploded into an uncalled-for over-exposure, via the world's only fully organic, wood & spirit mechanized orchestra, FORMS. released 13 September 2011 Download or stream on the web of mimicry website: http://downloads.web...saptarshi-radar
Guest Greg Reason
You know there's a vinyl version on the Mimicry website right? So good to have more Secret Chiefs 3, Trey is an absolute genius and everything he makes is fucking fantastic.
modey
This sounds great, but oh fuck I totally didn't realise Traditionalists had released an exclusive album! This song is probably one of my top 5 compositions of all time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZQDAM4gVJU

It's basically a direct homage to giallo soundtracks, but it's occasionally more disturbing on its own than most giallo films managed to be. baph
Have you heard Xaphan yet, modey?
Guest Greg Reason
Xaphan is ok but John Zorn is not as good a writer as Trey is. Book of Horizons is a work of genius and those some of the stuff on those four satellite 7"s were maybe even better but the compilation thing wasn't really an album... The Traditionalists record was fantastic but I'm hanging for Book of Souls! This sounds great, but oh fuck I totally didn't realise Traditionalists had released an exclusive album! I was lucky enough to get the mail-out so I bought it the day it went online.
baph
No argument on Spruance Being much > Zorn. But part of Trey's genius is his skill with arrangements, and xaphan is pretty firmly in the Traditionalists (and Forms) arrangement style. Might be up modey's alley (if he hasn't checked it yet). Re the new tracks-- check out how many frigging genres of percussion styles Danny Heifetz runs through with each individual iteration of the short theme on Radar. This track has some real hidden depth to it. Best band ever.
modey
I will check out Xaphan, thanks. I haven't heard anything since Book of Horizons. IMO it sucks when amazing bands keep putting out tiny amounts of music instead of just waiting and compiling an album. I can't really appreciate it that way, for some reason. baph
Here's one of the more "Traditionalists" sounding tracks on Xaphan in shitty youtube quality:
Guest Greg Reason
I can't believe how beautiful the production is on this, even by Trey's always-brilliant standards. It's absolutely crystal clear, so 3D I feel like reaching out and grabbing the sounds I think it may have something to do with the fact that he doesn't pre-master any of his releases, he keeps mixing and mixing until they sound as close to "perfect" as is possible, so there is never actually any mastering compression or limiting applied.... The dude is an absolute freak of nature. I just hope he keeps pumping this shit out for another fifty years
Guest Wall Bird
Man. Cannot believe I missed this release. I saw them three weeks ago and got to hear them perform both of the new tracks, plus some surf tunes that will hopefully be released soon. During that particular show Secret Chiefs 3 dethroned Amon Tobin as producer of the most powerful bass frequencies I have experienced in my life. The air that the keys/synth player was pushing through the venue's sub-woofers was so forceful that I literally felt like I had a box fan blowing in my face. Good stuff. Also, Timb Harris trumped everyone else in the band when it came to excellent showmanship. He really came alive on stage that night.
