Odessa Catacombs

"The Odessa Catacombs are an estimated 2,500 kilometres of labyrinths stretching out under the city and surrounding region of Odessa, Ukraine. The majority of the catacombs are the result of stone mining.

Most of the city's 19th century houses were built of limestone mined nearby. Abandoned mines were later used and widened by local smugglers. This created a gigantic labyrinth of underground tunnels beneath Odessa, known as the "catacombs"."

In the following picture is the remains of a girl who became lost in the catacombs during a New Years celebration in 2005. Her friends left the catacombs (probably drunk) and forgot she was still there (apparently). Stuck in pitch black darkness, feeling around the catacombs, she eventually died of dehydration. There are few more terrifying ways to die I think. She was not removed from the catacombs until 2007.

Cool stuff, would be terrifying down there I'm sure.

Has anyone read Stanley Donwood's book Catacombs of Terror? It's tremendous kitsch noir detective supernatural fun.

i don't know the layout of the catacombs (if there are multiple levels with hard to see access holes), but if it's essentially just a maze you can always find your way out by always turning the same direction. Maybe she didn't know that.

edit: nm, 2500 km lol

Looking at that thread is an uncomfortable mixture of feeling exhilarated by catacombs and feeling bad for the tragedy that befell mariya.

Also, there was apparently a psychedelic mushroom plantation in there at some point:

Yeah, I'm not sure it it's 2500 km combined lengths of tunnel, or if that's the area it covers in general. I presume it's the combined total of tunnel lengths. Here is just one of the maps from that thread:

Sorry I should have spoiler'd the pic of the girl. I cant edit my post now so maybe a mod can do it.

I find this stuff interesting and look at quite a bit of it on the internet, so It doesn't bother me much.

I don't get that thing about finding your way out of a maze by always turning the same way. Doesn't that make you go in circles? What if you find a dead end?

Interestingly, or perhaps not, I have learned that that technique doesn't work if the goal of the maze is in a circle at the centre as you'd just follow the wall and find yourself back at the edge. You could surely design a maze that would catch out people following this rule? I might investigate

Excessively detailed and sort of IDM/interesting page about maze solving algorithms: http://www.astrolog....th/algrithm.htm

And yes also if you're talking about an enormous multiple layered maze where you probably came in through a manhole or something I would just sit my ass down and go mouldy ASAP
