That's a complete ballache of hoops you have to jump through there...

yeah I always hear how jailbreaking is supposed to be this arduous task - it's not.

and for many android phones you have to root the device. same diff.

funny...every Nexus phone* I've owned has been a very simple procedure to go back a version, and don't require root. for the record, that link you provided wasn't for rooting, it was for going back a version.

*Nexus phones being the only phones released that run stock, unmodifed Android and that don't require any rooting to be done for the procedure.

Ok so you can do it without rooting - the number of steps required is pretty similar to downgrading iOS.

And one final thing - at least with iPhones you can actually get the upgrades ;)

can actually do it in shorter steps than that when using the fastboot program.

also just to let you know, the Nexus phones (the only ones officially to get stock Android) have just the same update longevity as iPhones. Oldest iPhone to receive iOS 5 is the iPhone 3GS which is 2 years old. If you're referring to that ridiculous chart that tries to treat all Android phones as equal, you're incredibly wrong.

I'm not trying to say that all android phones are equal. Will you do the same when discussing market share?

So by using the fastboot program you're replacing some steps with other steps at another time?

And fastboot doesn't seem like the easiest thing in the world to get running:

For the rest of you, it wasn't a pissing contest until oscillik brought it up. And Awepittance really? Comparing phones to political parties?

lol that is fastboot running under linux. which has ridiculous setup. the majority of people will be running Windows. and using fastboot under windows is as easy as typing one command, one syntax, and one file name all on the same line.

please, if you're going to appear like you know what you're talking about, actually know what you're talking about instead of googling for the answers.

also i never turned it into a dick length match, you did with that quote.

all i said originally was that it was a ridiculously long method to go through to revert back firmware on an iPhone. i never made any comparison to Android. you did that all by yourself.

You implied that Android was easier. It's well known that you enjoy using Android products - so not difficult to extrapolate.

How many windows users are going to know anything about fastboot? That's the first link that comes up when you google fastboot.

Ok so I googled "fastboot android windows" - this link comes up: http://androidforums.com/android-lounge/6905-windows-driver-install-using-adb-fastboot.html

You have to download an SDK?

And what's wrong with using google? The point of it is to have access to information, and interpret it.

Fine let's say I misconstrued your comment. Ignore everything I wrote about android.

It's really easy to jailbreak and go through those steps. Takes about 30 minutes tops.

i did nothing of the sort. my exact words were: That's a complete ballache of hoops you have to jump through there...

which means literally that it is a lot of hoops to be jumping through to do the firmware downgrade. I never mentioned anything about Android, Symbian, Maemo, MeeGo, BBOS, Bada, or any other mobile phone operating system. You inferred your own meaning into my words which wasn't there, and for that, you were mistaken. We shalln't just say that you misconstrued my comment. You definitely misconstrued my comment, placed your own subjective meaning onto what I actually meant, and then later accused me of starting some dick measuring contest when it was actually you who started it by bringing up Android where it wasn't even relevant.

Now to address your other points...

"How many windows users are going to know anything about fastboot?" - How many iPhone users are going to know anything about DFU Mode, editing the hosts file, clicking on the 'Restore' button with a particular key combination, the program TinyUmbrella? That is what Googling is for, as you so eloquently put.

Yes you have to download an SDK. But don't you have to download stuff to do the iPhone downgrade? (trick question, the answer is yes).

I'm sure I won't get an apology for being accused of starting shit here, but that's ok. I forgive you chenGOD.

Because you're a well known advocate of Android. Not such a huge leap.

And really? 4 steps is a ballache? (5 if you count the tiny umbrella step, which is not a given). Like I said - 30 minutes tops.

And i don't consider discussion starting shit - but I will take the blame for the dick measuring line.

Well it is a huge leap. If I had said "That's a complete ballache of hoops you have to jump through there, compared to Android" you would've been fully justified in saying that I started a pissing contest. But I didn't say that. You projected your own bias against either me personally, or your bias against Android, onto my comment. Not cool.

Yes really, I consider 5 steps (I count it as 5 since the article says that it is normal to have that error and need to use the program) to be a ballache.

You don't consider 'discussion' as starting shit? So why even mention about some pissing contest in the first place if it's just discussion? Some consistency please from a member of the moderation team (oh wait...lol). Yes you will take the blame, since you are to blame. I don't appreciate being implicated in something I haven't started.

You could have just left it alone. It is most certainly not a huge leap. It would be a huge leap to say "pen expers was a rational person about U2", or "theocide never lied about dying of aids". Because you have written many times on here advocating for Android and against Apple products, the association comes to mind.

You need to do about that many steps just to get fastboot running. Nevermind downgrading. So if you consider 5 steps for iPhone a ballache what do you call it for Android? You're being very disingenuous.

The pissing contest was directed at the users who complained that it was a pissing contest. I did imply that you started it, and in a way you did, because you said "that's a huge ballache" meaning that what - there is a better way. When you started it though, I didn't think you were starting shit. I thought you wanted discussion.

So yeah I recant on taking the blame, it's all on you. Like I said, you could have just left it alone.

The funny thing is - i don't even have an iPhone.

Jumping to conclusions.

About half of those 'steps' can be cut right out. A lot of those steps are not necessary just for the purpose of flashing a firmware file. How many of the steps for the procedure to downgrade iOS can be cut out? By the looks of it, absolutely none.

Again, I didn't start it. You are projecting your own meaning onto my words yet again. My statement never implied that there was 'a better way'. My statement meant exactly what it said. No inbetween the lines meaning, no hidden meaning, nothing other than the words I typed.

The blame is on you.

You started it by typing the "ballache" line. My initial post was - of course you can downgrade. you replied to that with the "ballache" post. It's not difficult, you're the one who's projecting. Again it's not jumping to conclusions, it's a logical association to make. Premise the opposite of "ballache number of steps" is "an easier number of steps".

Regardless of if you can cut out half those steps for fastboot, you still have to install fastboot before you can downgrade.

Am I the only person who bought an iPhone 4s and didn't have a battery problem? I am not sure the details about this, but I usually have to charge my phone every 3-4 days, but I thought that was about standard.
