That looks beautiful  . I never knew Slayer released a vinyl boxset! Discogs dictates I will be a few quid poorer in the not too distant future.

Great suggestions, got some of them, going to check out a few others. Anyone know any good house/techno/chicago/detroit comps? Been really digging the Trax 20th century 3 disc thing, quality.

Anyone know any good house/techno/chicago/detroit comps?

Renaissance-The-Classics-Front-Cover-43559.jpg

This is an absolute stunning release. Mixed by Anthony Pappa (LEGEND), the tracklisting is full of classics you would expect and plenty you wouldnt (especially disc 3). You can pick this up pretty cheap now.

  6. Last Rhythm (Last Rhythm)
  7. I Can't Get No Sleep (Masters At Work Feat. India)
  8. Show Me Love (Robin S)
  9. Move Your Body (Xpansions)
  10. Make The World Go Round (Sandy B)
  11. That's The Way Love Is (Ten City)
  12. Don't Lose the Magic (Shawn Christopher)

  15. The Pressure (Sounds Of Blackness)
  16. As Always (Secret Life)

Disc 2

  1. My Love (Collapse)
  2. Where Love Lives (Alison Limerick)
  3. Voodoo Ray (A Guy Called Gerald)
  4. Everybody (All Over The World) (FPI Project)
  5. Ride On Time/People Hold On (Black Box) (Coldcut)
  6. Good Life (Inner City)

  9. The Mighty Ming/Forever And A Day (Brothers In Rhythm) (Brothers Love Dubs)
  10. Passion/Kickin' In The Beat (Gat Decor) (Pamela Fernandez)

Disc 3

  1. Don't Look Any Further (Dennis Edwards)
  2. Keep On Movin' (Soul II Soul)
  3. Dub Be Good To Me (Beats International)

  6. Little Fluffy Clouds (The Orb)
  7. Snappiness (BBG)
  8. Release The Pressure (Leftfield)
  9. Talking With Myself (Electribe 101)
  10. Always There (Incognito)
  11. Let The Beat Hit 'Em (Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam)
  12. Everybody Dance Now (C & C Music Factory)

  14. Sueno Latino (Sueno Latino)
  15. Pacific State (808 State)
  16. Smokebelch II (Sabres Of Paradise)
  17. Gorecki (Lamb)

You might also want to check out some of the earlier Balance mix CDs (015: Will Saul for 3 CDs of house, tech, dub stuff, 014: Joris Voorn is an essential double CD tech house mix, 007: Chris Fortier is also very very good and spread over 3 discs).

The early Global Underground mix CDs were essential, but the recent ones are farcical. Stay clear of everything above number 30 really, forgettable and pretty bland (you can tell when ministry of sound took over the troubled label.....). John Digweed, Sasha, Nick Warren, James Lavelle and Darren Emerson all had really good mixes here.

How far do I go?

A lot of the fabric CDs are what I would call essential. Doc Martin (010) is a masterclass in deep groovy sleazy house. Andrew Weatherall (019) is a fun and expertly mixed collection of electro and techy house beasts. Wiggle (028) does exactly what it says on the tin - ass shakin' funky tech. Magda, Shackleton, Surgeon, Adam Beyer and Jon Marsh also spring to mind as being particularly memorable and purchase worthy editions.

Full list here - and also now available digitally - so bag yourself a few if you dont have them already...

NB: Not exactly box sets, but worth checking out....

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I just got this great Chicago footwork comp: http://www.planet.mu/discography/ZIQ290 Worth checking out.

Also have to mention the Nuggets set: http://www.rhino.com/shop/product/various-artists-nuggets-original-artyfacts-from-the-first-psychedelic-era-1965-1968-4cd Often overlooked psychedelic bands from the late 60's; I love this one.

Seconding the Deathprod.

Nobody's mentioned Goodbye, Babylon yet. That one is fucking stunning.

There's a Soul Jazz "Chicago Acid And Experimental House" double-cd that is pretty good. I wouldn't call it a box set though.

Future Sound of Infinity (cheap 15 bucks 4cd set with some FSOL rarities and other lesser known awesome early techno tracks)

Clicks and Cuts (Mille Plateaux)

Cottage Industries (Neo Ouija)

WARP 10+3: Remixes (SOOO GOOD)

Coldcut: 70 Minutes of Madness (everyone that is anyone knows and worships this mix)

Richie Hawtin: DE9 series (especially Decks, EFX and 909)

James Brown 30th Anniversary Collection

so many others...

the Cocteau Twins boxset is hard to get a hold of now..isnt it? The two 2cd volumes of Lullibies to Violaine cover almost the exact same material for far cheaper.
