Essential Autechre live sets

Recommended Posts

From what I've noticed most of the tours from a given album's time period are very similar

Is there any basic list that will give an overview of the essential live sets, as in, the ones that characterize each tour the best, and are the highest quality?

Also I can't find an organized list of every single soundboard, in one place. Is there one? I've searched, but if there is a thread about this sorry.

Ones that are available from the oversteps tour include:

Live @ Pure, Manchester (There's two recordings of this. One is a really good quality crowd recording that has about 8 mins missing from the start, and another one that is complete but much lower quality......still worth getting though, always cool to get a different impression of what the acoustics were like..)

Live @ Domino festival (Really high quality, some fucking amazing stuff in there)

Live in Kino Siska, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Live @ Button Factory, Dublin

Live @ Hackney

Hope this helps. Happy Hunting

Goddamn thing won't let me edit that post. Anyway, these are the best quality ones:

1998-08-09 - Canada-British Columbia-Vancouver - Palladium Club

1999-10-10 - USA-California-Palm Springs - Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

1999-11-05 - UK-England-London - Old Truman Brewery - Z Rooms - Warp 10th Anniversary Party

2000-XX-XX - Germany-Berlin (broadcast on Kriegstanz Radio)

2005-04-15 - UK-Scotland-Glasgow - Arts School

2005-05-10 - Canada-Quebec-Montreal - Usine C

2005-05-12 - USA-Michigan-Detroit - Masonic Temple Theatre

2006-04-22 - Spain - Zaragoza Festival

2007-03-25 - UK-England-Hemsby - Pontin's Holiday Park

2007-03-30 - Belguim - Les Halles de Schaerbeek - Reset

2007-07-14 - Belgium-Dour - Dour Festival

Oversteps:

Live @ Pure, Manchester

Live @ Domino festival (Really high quality, some fucking amazing stuff in there)

I'd recommend finding all of them though, they're all worth listening to. Even, say, the London SEone 2005 gig, which is really distorted has some fucking incredible moments in it. A lot of them are grand quality anyway, but the ones in red are the ones which, to my memory, have a good bit of bass and still maintain clarity.

*and i could be wrong about the dates for the 1998 vancouver set and the 1998 manchester one, there's set from those locations from 1998-2001, so it's one or the other.

  • 3 weeks later...

kind of related: anyone have any good guess as to what sampler/drum machine (specifically interested in the drum/percussion sounds) was used in the '98 Palladium show? i've found multiple gear lists, but i haven't gone to find samples of every sampler/drum machine listed that i'm not familiar with...because, well, that's a LOT of looking and listening for what may be a fruitless venture. so any nudges in the right direction would be appreciated.

OK take this with a big ass grain of salt but I remember this site, which has long since gone down, with some really grainy GIF photos from a Belgium (IIRC) set around the same time period. Among these was an overhead of their gear, which included:

-2 MMT8s

-1 Nord Lead rack

-1 Yamaha SU10 (seriously!)

-Some rack stuff, among which I believe was some kind of Alesis processor (e.g. Quadraverb). Judging by the content of the set, I think there must have been at least one other sampler in there - maybe their ASR10?

I am not saying this is what they used, only that this grainy, shitty photo is how I imagine them at work when I listen to that (fabulous) set.

I'm also thinking there's an MD deck in there somewhere, partly because this was around the time Minidisc was released and they seemed to be experimenting with them a bit, and partly because there seemed to be some distinctly prepared-sounding transitions.

Edit: found the pic!

dude, thanks! that mmt8 sounds like it may be the root of how they're manipulating the the drum sounds in a lot of the set, particularly the bits i'm interested in. that yamaha sounds awesome, i remember considering it a while back before i got my 404...i really should've gone with something like that instead (update, just checked ebay and purchased one for $77. haha!). now i'll have to remember to scout around ebay/elsewhere for a good deal on a mmt8.

pre-emption: i'm NOT an AE fanboy (not because of this discussion, at least), just have always loved those drum sounds since originally hearing that set.

they may have been using the yamaha for some of the samples in the set, but it's hard to say for sure. especially with those two, there's no telling.

edit: cause i'm an idiot.

Heh heh. I am. If you couldn't tell.

Well, hold on a minute...

Please elaborate on how you imagine them using the mmt8 for manipulating drum sounds.

Yeah, this would be the extent of manipulation with the MMT8:

- Mute/Unmute track

- Change pattern

they may have been using the yamaha for some of the samples in the set, but it's hard to say for sure. especially with those two, there's no telling.

Exactly. I reckon that most of the weirdness comes from messing the ASR. IIRC that set didn't have a whole lot of real-time manipulation on the drums, so a lot of that was just weird samples. What was changed in real-time could be a result of:

- Tweaking ASR params using MIDI controllers (although I don't spy any in that pic besides the NL) or MMT8 tracks (i.e. using pre-recorded CCs on one of the tracks)

- Tweaking NL params using onboard knobs, velocity or MMT8 tracks - I believe this is pretty likely for some of the Cichlisuite-type sounds, since they used that and probably an RY30 for many of the tracks

- Tweaking FX params using above methods. A little effect tweaking goes a long way.

- Playing with that dumb assed "ribbon controller" on the SU10.

I have an MMT8, which I haven't used in years, and let me tell you it would be a pain in the ass to assemble this kind of a set with two of them. But that's how a ton of people rolled in the 90s, Orbital for another example. A used MPC1000, even with the stock OS, will take you way further. The only thing a pair of MMT8s would have over that setup would be the ability to play 2 patterns of different lengths.

I've also owned an SU10. The thought crossed my mind that they were playing some of the drums off that. It's possible, but he only parts that sound to me like they could be SU10 are some of the grungy pad-type sounds; I think it's a lot more likely that they were using it for transitions in a similar way to the MD player.

Basically those are toys now. You can certainly have fun with them, but you'd be much better off with an MPC1000 and your choice of decent fx processor and multitimbral synth with decent MIDI spec. Hell, an MPC + a TX81Z + a Quadraverb are a pretty fun combo, if you're not scared of menu diving.

well i've never owned a standalone MIDI sequencer/controller, so i'm definitely lacking in hands-on knowledge here. i was imagining the possibility of them tweaking the drum sounds generated on the SU10 or Nord Lead (i'm pretty sure you can sequence drum loops/etc on the Nord Lead, correct?) with the MMT-8. i understand that isn't going to truly change the audio, just the patterns and MIDI information; but it seems i may have been very mistaken in how detailed the MMT-8 can be when it comes to manipulating something like a drum pattern. from what you're saying, it mostly just triggers loops in outside sources and/or sends loops/patterns/melodies/whatever, by way of MIDI, to an outside synth or drum machine...or am i totally missing the idea?

meh, i like toys. all the old shitty keyboards i have are proof of that. i've just always wanted a 'perfect' drum machine, and honestly, the old Zoom RT-123 is the closest to what i imagine. it's just missing those extra layers of drum sound tweaking and complex real-time rhythm modification that i've always dreamed of. i'm weird, i know.
