I love VVVVV so hard.

me too. Just the right amount of challenging.

And Yet It Moves is another good one.

Passage is an interesting statement....

and enigmo is not really indie (developed by PangaeaSoft) but it's goddamned great (and i don't see it mentioned often soooo).

Don't say Dwarf Fortress, everyone's heard of that.

Minecraft.

Really, it's a good example of the untapped potential of indie games. A lot of games mentioned in this thread would be as popular as Minecraft if they were even remotely fun.

Nethack

Hasn't aged that well, unfortunately most roguelikes today aren't much better. But try Brogue for the pretty graphics.

Do you even think before you open your mouth and let torrents of shit fall out?

Nah j/k but Nethack has aged beautifully. It's timeless, punishing, vital. Other Roguelikes come and go, but Nethack is the genre's standard-bearer. Compare it to the more polished and contemporary Dungeons of Dredmore (specifically designed to cater to today's indie crowd) - actually, there IS no comparison. One for the Dark Souls players.

If you care about pretty graphics, go play Diablo.

Pretty graphics? Give me a break. Nethack's graphics are fucking sweet... No bullshit, just functional enough for the game to work. At the same time, there's something immersive and wildly creative about them. Mind you, I started it recently, and thought I'd never get into the look of it, much less get the look of it. Shortly after I realized you get so used to the ascii that people's email addresses look like horrific nightmares. I just love putting on some chiptunes, grabbing some coffee or beer, starting up the game and pretending like the last 20 years of gaming never happened.

But to me nethack isn't really about getting into the shitty graphics in a hipsterish manner, it's about eating slain dwarves and throwing monster corpses at stuff. Brogue looks really messy to me for some reason, but I'll give it a try sometime.

the binding of isaac. Basically a roguelike shooter with zelda style rooms. $5 on steam, from the creator of super meat boy. Insanely simple yet insanely good.

Oh yes. Definitely a must. Very difficult, but very fun.

My brother beat VVVVVV in one night yesterday. I'm so jealous. The kid is pretty damn good at Megaman, so I guess that explains it.

Another good game, Eufloria (Known as Dyson back in the day).

I'll give that a go as well.

I forgot about 2 fantastic Local Multiplayer games. Both are Tron-likes.

Armagetron Advance

I used to play this game all of the time with my friends back in highschool.

Cubes

It's like armagetron, but with the addition of the Y axis, and shooting. I haven't actually played this game multiplayer yet, but it looks brilliant.

thought some would be interersted in this

haven't played it yet but the art style is reminiscent of Neverhood/Grimfandango

yeah i played that, a while back. definitely Neverhood reminiscent, but unique. not very long, and not much depth. pretty tho :)

This looks pretty sweet, just when I was thinking "they could probably 3dify this idea" it delivered the goods. Thanks will check it out!

Dreammachine instantly reminded me of Neverhood too, playing throught it at the moment. Nothing too challenging so far puzzle-wise, seems more an ambient piece than anything. I like the unique atmosphere of it like in Machinarium

NEW BUNDLE!

http://www.humblebundle.com/

Sadly, I owned most of the games, but I still bought it for the 2 games (and 2 demos) I didn't own. 8 Games for 3ish dollars is a damn fine deal. Games include: Nevermind, here's a video.

Introversion is a really cool developer. DEFCON and Darwinia are both pretty sweet.

Kaipuu (from the same creator as Painajainen)

Glum Buster:

And a game as far detached from those three as possible and for those who always wondered what the love child between Myst and Gantz Graf would look like, there's Fract:

-The Cat and the Coup (More Educational about the US/UK-Iranian Coup, but I'm really interested in that anyway; Beautiful Art!) [FREE ON STEAM]

murve, i've checked this last night. me and ex-voto played thru it in an hour or so: surrealist vibe, very pretty, especially graphically. eric satie soundtrack. kinda shallow, cos its (it's) short and not very text-heavy intheleast. but i'll still say it's a gem in a sea of tepid BS.

i'm playing the Cat and the Coup again and the graphical style is really something

The Cat and the Coup is a documentary game in which you play the cat of Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran. During the summer of 1953, the CIA engineered a coup to bring about his downfall. As a player, you coax Mossadegh back through significant events of his life by knocking objects off of shelves, scattering his papers, jumping on his lap and scratching him.
