Not the last track - it was played, but was not included on the official Peel Session CD for Boards of Canada.

Looks like something that could have been made with a color printer and a cd label sticker.

 

It was - and it's interesting to now know there's 3 other copies in existence somewhere...

 

AFAIK, this was made from the master recordings used for the Peel Session, so the quality of XYZ is the best available.

i don't mind them doing ultra limited stuff. if xyz wasn't out there at all and only 5 people heard it, that is one thing...

 

i do like the photos a lot, but hate the typography.

 

LOL, I love it when people assume I'm joined at the hip with Boards - no, I was aware of this item (someone else I know has one) and was unaware that DJ Food had one, as well as three other people apparently if it's true that there are indeed only 5 copies (considering it's a CD-R with hand-made labels and inserts, probably true).

 

What really irritates me is someone brought a legitimate bit of interesting BoC info to light here, and all people can do is complain about how Boards are so awful for doing something that frankly was none of anyone's business in the first place to know or even care about, since this was something they made for friends as a personal gift, not some marketing tool or designed to get the fans' panties in a bunch.

 

What sickens me even more is these so-called 'fans' will be falling over themselves when the new material finally does surface, forgetting all about their frustration-fueled rants from the past several years.

Isn't that the same eagle? This is an official BoC image, representing 'An Eagle In Your Mind' in the MHTRTC image tracklist. I'm pretty sure the original version of this highly 'shopped image is on that Peel Session cover, would would prove that only BoC could've produced it.

 

Also, may I ask, is the 'Happy Cycling' on this CD the alternate version that was actually broadcast? I know it was edited quite a bit for the Warp release.

Who is this Dj Food? I haven't seen any threads about him in the Music Discussion forum. Slightly silly name anyway.

 

If you are a friend or family member of BOC and have any photo's of past christmas presents you have got from either of the Sandisons, could you please post them on-line so I can have a wank over them. Slippers, tea cosy's, puzzles, train sets, bird tables or stickle bricks. Anything will do.

Who is this Dj Food?

My dear boy DJ Food is/was the name for the setup consisting of Matt Black & Jonathan More (aka Coldcut) who were joined with Patrick Carpenter and Kevin Foakes (the latter being the only remaining member). Off the top of my head they've been responsible for Blech II, the Ninja Tune retrospective, and more recently the 20 year Ninja Tune megamix thing but they've done a lot more. So yeah, responsible for quite a bit of gubbins ....

If you read the Record Collector article, he's also got shitloads of other rare stuff collected over the years including an original Twoism. The fact that he did http://www.discogs.c...release/2227145 and gave 4 out of 10 copies produced to BoC makes me think they get on well.

 

He's my "friend" on facebook, maybe i'll ask him how he knows the bro's.

Hi Stephen. I met them in 1997, the day of the general election when Labour got in, we were both playing a festival in Sheffield curated by Mira Calix. We both stayed at the house of one of the Warp employees at the time.

 

I knew their stuff because of doing work with Skam on the design front and because Chantal (Mira Calix) used to share a flat with me in London. I was a massive fan since I heard the High Scores EP and I think this was between the MHTRTC LP coming out and the Warp 10 because I remember listening to a test pressing of their track for the compilation at the house.

 

I asked them about the sample right at the end of Everything you Do is a Balloon (the little guitar squiggle on the fade out) and said that it was a John Abercrombie track (Timeless) and they were stunned because they'd sampled it from a porno soundtrack and never knew what it was. I had a couple of copies so I said I'd send them one when I got home.

I did so and didn't think much more of it but then a package arrived with this CD in it and a typed note from Marcus. He thanked me for the record and was just so chuffed that I'd solved what the track was - it's a killer 9 minute song on the ECM label. On the CD it says 'very limited edition' and in the letter he says there are only 5 copies. So that's how I came to own this and it's one of my most prized pieces, I hoped they'd feature it in the RC piece but they didn't print that picture (I sent them loads) so I uploaded it for anyone who was interested to see.

The general election reference though would put the date at 1 May 1997. If Boards of Canada played any show on that date, I'm not aware of it, though it's not implausible as they played two other festivals that summer (Phoenix on 20 July and Sunflower on 26 July).

 

If you could bother him for a follow-up I'd be curious to know more about the details of that show.

I did a quick search in the idm mailing list archives and I can't find trace of a festival in Shefield (or any show of significance) on that 1 May 1997 date.

Every month they talk to someone with a huge record collecton, and this month it's him. You get about 3 pages of him answering questions relating to what he's got etc.

 

Only came out a couple of days ago and has Led Zep on the cover.

I'll ask him, seems a decent guy. The only thing he won't do is scan a copy of the letter Marcus sent him with the cd as it's personal.

He says it was definately the Test One festival, and must have got his dates mixed up.
