Berlin recommendations

So here I am at the Berlinale and already fed up with the festival's ticketing/accreditation politics. I feel bad about crawling behind my laptop. As I remember seeing some valuable recommendations in a London thread a while ago, I figured asking watmm what I should see in Berlin couldn't hurt.

Shopping

-Record stores - braindance stuff and/or soundtracks

-weird kitsch second-hand/retro items

-trashy photography stuff (polaroid, old film)

Culture

-anything; movies, music, exhibitions, restaurants

Vielen dank

Fantastic topic! I'm going to visit a friend that lives in Kreuzberg this weekend. We are going to Watergate for Four Tet/Lindstrøm++ on friday, Hertha-Dortmund and Berghain on saturday, and some films at the Berlinale on Sunday. Action-packed weekend.

What I want is a tip for a good Turkish restaurant and a nice place to buy records.

When I was there I went to the berlin film museum in potsdamer platz. Worth a trip.

We also rented bikes. Great way to see the city.

Cool town.

When I went it was 2003-2004 and there were all sorts of artist squat galleries along the northern stretch of the mitte. I wonder of those are still there. The one we went to was covered with tons of rad grafitti and was near the cemetary with Brecht's grave.

Berghain

only if you're white.

not in the slightest

Yeah, what a stupid thing to say. Why do you think Berghain is racist?

There are several threads about this already...

Exhibitions: Hamburger Bahnhof and Berlinische Gallerie (contemporary stuff)

Retro second-hand stuff (overpriced) you will find almost everywhere. Kreuzberg is a good place to start.

But be careful: The Berlin residents don't like tourist hipsters :emotawesomepm9::mu-ziq:

first hand experience i've mentioned before in another berlin thread. i was told by a barman that there was no chance my asian friend would get in cos of his race and he was right.

yeah same.... plus lots of black guys, turkish guys (not a given in germany) and so on. i really really don't think they refused him because of his race; they're just incredibly picky and unpredictable.
