People were saying this all the time, then i listen to Kid A and i was cock-struck by the fact that it didn't sound anything like "Start as you mean to go on". You know he is being straight down the line and, that's rare to see in an interview (in my experience), just pure honesty.. Sort of interesting his reply to the fact he has 3 guitarists in his band 'yeah what a bummer' so I think we are very lucky to still have Radiohead in one peice. Just because a collaboration is massively successful, it doesn't also mean that some of the pain endured throughout the process is minimized. Maybe quite the contrary. If you were, say, in a wildly successful band or other kind of creative/collaborative endeavor with difficult personalities (perhaps you being the main problem, and you are aware of it... who knows), you probably feel like you have more of a responsibility to steer an otherwise sinking ship to safety. On that level, too, you are a corporation that employs many other people. That shit could be horrendous. I think he was at a point where he was questioning the value of his previous music if people were misinterpreting it to the point where they thought Radiohead should be the next U2. After lots of work and touring, you'd feel chewed up and spit out I'm sure. He didn't want to live up to what other people thought he was supposed to be doing, and he had to convince the rest of the band that taking this giant risk in changing their sound could actually work and open up more potential.
