Some more albums recently listened:

Pram - Dark Island

Macabre; lounge/jazzy; noir soundtrack sort of stuff. A very English type of sinister. A mixture of instrumentals employing all sorts of music box type of sounds. The vocal tracks are dark tales of lost love and possession sung in almost leaden style, which suits the atmosphere of the album perfectly. 6/10

Green Velvet - Walk in Love

Stripped down banging house music. Love this guy. I love the way his albums are a mixture of very personal tracks as well as comedy ones; or cynical comments on clubland and the media. He manages to get a lot of meaning across in a style not normally known for it. Some really banging beats on here as well. 7/10

Casino vs Japan - Go Hawaii

I should have listened to this more, for the length of time I've had the album. Boards of Canada-style distorted beats and lush synthy melodies. But altogether a lot more jolly and summery.  And as the name suggests, reminiscent of Hawaii...or reminiscent of how Hawaii seems in films and tv adverts anyway. Very pleasant without ever getting twee or cloying. 7/10

Fanu - Daylightless (1st half only)

Dark complex intricate drum'n'bass. Yeah some sick dark beats basically, lots of Asian-sounding vocal samples. A bit like some of Enduser's stuff. Doesn't quite veer into full on breakcore but getting there at points. I think the second disk is half-tempo tracks. 6/10 for now

Baby Ford - Basking in the brake lights

Minimal techno/micro house. A mixed bag; some decent tracks and some that don't leave much of an impression. Would probably be better suited to wobbling round a seedy dancefloor at 5am. 5/10 for now, needs more listens

Autechre - Confield

Obviously something of a sacred cow. I've had it kicking around for years but never listened to it in its entirety. And I just can't get into it; I enjoy some of the tracks (Bine, Uvoil, Eidetic Casein) but at least half of it just leaves me cold. Seems silly to give it a rating as it is such a classic for some people, but mine would have to be 5/10

welcom aboard matey! watch yr steps though, this type of thingy could cause u a bit of trouble..

ha yes I didn't think that would be a popular view. Just feel like I'm still waiting for that 'click' moment with some of their stuff.
Because of this post I finally took some time to listen to Confield. First time as well, only track I already knew (and enjoyed) was Pen Expers. And well the whole album just blew me away on first listen which is something that doesn't happen often with Ae stuff I reckon.

Also just discovered N.o.W.'s A Word Of Science, this album is great, nice blend of "bleep" techno, trip hop etc. Some tracks are real standouts (Sal Batardes especially !!). If somebody has other early Warp stuff to recommend - I'd be keen to hear more !

Julian Casablancas + The Voidz - Tyranny

The name alone is probably enough to turn a lot of people off. But I gotta say, the song "Human Sadness" is an absolute monolithic psychodrama beast of an 11 minute song. It's so glaringly amazing that I've not gotten to give the rest of the album enough attention. It really cut through to something in me.

listened to a bunch of Fila Brazillia albums (the first four or five I think) the other day, had been a while, still great.

i fkn love that batch of lp's Fila Brazilia put out on Pork mid-late 90's, Power Clown had an artwork booklet that was funny as fuck, but went its own way with my own copy, every lp from that period has real gems

Pork itself put out so much good music, i'd expect to see it referenced on a site like this more often......like the mellower end/version of Weatherall/2 Lone Swordsmen

add EM:T from Nottingham & a few more that cross-pollinated, Pork did a few nights around the north insaniac mon/tues uber comedown grooves, god i'm old

The Hafler Trio - Cleave: 9 Great Openings.......as good as drone will ever get, similar to "Sumac" by J Coleclough & Andrew Chalk, ideal for a clear moonlit winter night

peter thomas & mocambo astronautic sound orchestra - space patrol (orion 2016): wow, i had a feeling this was going to be good but this blew me away. extremely funky 45 with two (different) and funkier versions from the space patrol ost. on par with his golden ring sound music album except this is only 6 minutes long

Some recent ones...

Thundercat - Drunk

The first two thirds are delicious but that last run of tracks is pretty boring. Also a lot of the stuff on here is in dire need of fleshing out/expanding on. But yeah overall, very enjoyable.

Brian Jonestown Massacre - Don't Get Lost

I can't remember it too well but I think I enjoyed it lol, had some nice ambient/electronic bits in there which seemed unexpected for a BJM record. Need to revisit this one.

Children of Alice - S/T

Quite nice, didn't blow me away or anything. Definitely need to be in a specific mindframe to properly get into it.

Grandaddy - Last Place

All the good tracks are used up in the first half, but to be fair they are very good. Second half is quite bland so the track order could have done with some rejigging. Pretty much how I feel about the Thundercat record minus the underdeveloped tunes.

as a recent convert to Spotify premium, I've been listening to shit loads of stuff, and had a grand old time doing so

Pinch - Underwater Dancehall - very cool album, I usually listen to the instrumental versions

NEU! - neu!, neu! 2, neu! 75 - first album is pretty good, second's pretty iffy, the third is pretty great

Bowie - No Plan EP

Echo and The Bunneymen - Crocodiles, Porcupine, Heaven Up Here, Ocean Rain - After being on the 'list to listen too' for about 2 decades they finally see the light of day!

Emeralds - Does It look Like I'm Here

Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus - Never quite understood the praise of this album, though Steps to Perfection and Silence are great.

Porcupine Tree - In Absentina - Massively rated band which for some reason I know nothing about but I dunno about this album, thought it was shit to be honest...

Soundboy Punishments - Skull Disco - Classic

Aesop Rock -The Impossible Kid - Classic

Call Super - Suzi Electro - Some interesting tunes on this album, needs more plays

Actress - Splashz and R.I.P - Still can't decide on this particular music maker, the jury is still out (and gone on vacation)

Alice In Chains - Jar of Flies - Long time since I played this last. Blew my head off tbh. Classic.

father john misty - i love you honeybear

a drummer quits his dayjob from a band only known for harmonies and makes an album of high school level philosophizing "deep" lyrics and paints himself as some kind of misanthropic yet romantic post-ironic lothario character and writes songs that sound like discount randy newman if you removed randy newman's gift for lyricism and melody and arrangement. i hate everything about this album.

Randomly decided to grab the OST for Inherent Vice in Fopp today. Like it a lot. Haven't seen the film yet, sometimes you just gotta do these things.

Right now I'm halfway through Cryptograms (Deerhunter)

Just can never decide with this album whether it's a work of mad genius or a total fucking disaster. Obviously the band have talent and have the chops as they prove in the future. I can hear glimmers of brilliance within the murk, but it just sounds an incoherent mess. Even their best albums are pretty wonky imho.

I'm pretty sure if I was chilled out and mildly tripping in the sunshine somewhere in a glorious green countryside it would sound much, much better than sitting in a wooden shed down the bottom of an English garden under a gloomy grey sky, trying hard to work this thing out (for the umpteenth time).
