This recording contains 7 remixes by Mark Fell of the first three 12” singles released on the record label Sensate Focus in 2012. These were called ‘10’, ‘5’ and ‘3.3...’. The first of these, ‘10’, was itself a reworking of materials from an earlier project by Fell and Terre Thaemlitz, released on Comatonse Recordings in 2012. The 7 remixes were written and recorded in June 2012 at the Upper Lounge, Chatham Street (UK) using a MacBook Pro running Digital Performer, FM8 (featuring manipulated DX100 and TX81Z presets), Battery and Razor; monitored and mixed with Sennheiser HD 25 headphones. Here hand claps are constructed from the Roland TR707 clap, two copies of which are detuned and panned hard left and right, with an additional Yamaha RX11 Clap 2 panned centrally; kick drums have been constructed with the Roland TR707 Kick 1 pitched up with bass content attenuated, overdubbed with samples from vinyl derived, it is assumed, from the Roland TR909. Two hi hats are used: the Yamaha RX11 Closed Hat 1, and a sample from Bassmental's ‘2 Daye Revisit (Kerri Chandler remix)’, released on Nite Grooves, 1994. Recommended contextual materials include: ‘Can You Feel It (Dubby Dub Marc Kinchen remix)’ by Chez Damier, released on KMS, 1992; ‘Hard To Get’ by Choo Ables, released on E-SA records, 1993.

High hopes for this. The last Fell releases seem to show up a guy recycling himself without the SND name. And it do not get better with that artsyfartsy conceptual sidenotes he prints up for the releases. A Roland TR707 Kick is a Roland TR707 Kick. Nothing more or less.

I have to explain a bit- reading notes for a reissue, some interesting anecdotes for an album etc. is something I really enjoy. The problem is that most artists try to get attention: "please read along how I made this Max/MSP patch in eight years which was used on this album"- I don't hear it if the kickdrum was hard panned with a binaural effect to re-create a virtual stereo field to say it to the extreme.

 

Well, sample sources are a different thing- but not that technical notes nobody without knowledge would notice.

I think it just fits with his general aesthetic of demystification, which I really appreciate. It's sort of like sharing (very small) snippets of audio source code. I learned most of what I know about using samples by dissecting Lassi Nikko's mods as dune/Brothomstates, which developed my appetite for this kind of detail.

I tend to prefer the SND stuff to his solo stuff, since although I think his sound design is incredible, I find albums like Multistability or UL8 a bit tedious to listen to. This, however, sounds a little more straightforward compositionally with the same great sound design, so I'm pretty excited to hear the album proper.

Just ordered this from Bleep after listening on Spotify. I prefer it to his recent releases and much prefer the sound over the Sensate Focus 12s (first 2, not heard the 3rd yet), they were not Snd enough for me.
