"Announcement! I'm heading of to Bucharest to start work on my new film, The Zero Theorem. It stars everybody's favorite Nazi, the great Christoph Waltz. Very original script about a man waiting for a telephone call that will give meaning to his life. Some other things happen as well. It's profound and funny in more or less equal measures. We're going to have fun. I'll keep you posted as the cast expands."

id rather Gillliam adapt other people's work at this point, it just seems like everything he's done since Fear and Loathing, which wasn't a perfect film but pretty damn good has been kind of half-baked and not very cohesive. Maybe im insane but i liked Grimm more than Parnassus and that was clearly botched by a studio, but if a movie botched by a studio ends up being better than a movie entirely Gilliams i dont really know what to think. Tideland opened very strongly but then like a lot of his films falls apart in the 2nd half into something totally unsatisfying and redundant.

Who's idea was it to cast the dwarf from Austin Powers in Parnassus? fucking terrible idea, it was distracting every-time he would be on the screen only marginally saved by Heath Ledger and Chris Plummer

its frustrating to watch Gilliam evolve as a filmmaker because he is undeniably filled with more creativity than most living filmmakers today but he just seems to often fizzle when he's taking all these ideas into fruition

Parnassus had about 10 minutes of great but the rest was a mess

there I fixed that for you

sorry, your loss. I won't even get into Tideland w you. A great director can do many different types of films, I like Terry's bc he always carries the same theme but in different ways; the difference between reality and fantasy.

He is full of creative energy but I feel he needs someone to help him mold it into something that will translate for an audience.

I really wanted to like it as I like Gilliam a lot and will always see anything he puts out, but it just didn't get there. The beginning set the scene very well and showed a lot of promise but I felt a lot of the second half or so of it just felt like a lot of pointless meandering. I'll give it another shot, just for you my dear. Maybe I'll like it more or at the very least be able to articulate more specifically what didn't work for me, as it's been quite a few years since I've seen it.

Trailer was up briefly today, now all YouTube, Vimeo, and dailymotion links have been pulled. Looks batshit crazy like Brazil, but this time based on math. Christoph is bald and no eyebrows, very creepy. Of course being Gilliam it all flashed by too fast to make sense of. Hopefully trailer will re-emerge soon.

What I love about terry gilliam's films is how sprawling they can feel on first watch. I remember the first time I watched Brazil, it was this ever unfolding tense and strange experience that never seemed to let up, and left me feeling kind of lost, yet euphoric by the end.

Yeah, Brazil is quite uncomfortable, from what I can recall. I don't like his more overtly "message" films, and that seemed like one of them. I prefer whimsy, with a heavy edge (like the fact that Munchausen and Time Bandits are ultimately meditations on growing up and aging). But I don't need Gilliam telling that conformity is bad, mmmmkay? I get that already.

Hang on I'll write and tell him.

He says fuck off

how did you hear him with all the wind rustling as he was riding Terry Jone's stylistic coat-tails?

i've not truly been satisfied by gilliam since 12 monkeys. i was thoroughly entertained by fear and loathing in las vegas, but i was not truly 'moved' by it; as was the case with many of his masterworks. the zero theorem has many potential pieces of what could be quite a big deal. i have a good feeling about this.
