I see these cunts at beer festivals, with notepads and pens. They spend more time faffing about, taking notes and talking drivel than they do drinking. Just trainspotters who drink half measures and then score everything with numbers out of ten with decimal points. Which isn't really what beer drinking is about is it?

 

Been drinking independantly brewed beer since I was 19 so I don't really see what all the fuss is about to be honest. Before that it was snakebite hahahahahhhahahhh!!!

 

Even threads like this are a bit lame. People taking photos of a beer bottle before drinking it lol. OK whatever.

Beer Hipsters are one thing, but I can't imagine how sharing the stuff you like or think is interesting with others is a bad thing.

 

You're in the UK and I can't speak for you, but it's almost impossible in certain less metropolitan parts of the United States to find anything that isn't brewed by Coors/Miller/Anheuser-Busch. Maybe a Sam Adams Light Lager if you're lucky and the grocery store is owned by a homosexual big business-hating socialist.

 

Fortunately, things have been improving quite a bit over the last 10-15 years.

People like to share their passions :shrug: Might as well make fun of watmm for talking about electronic music... I've also heard of people known as tickers that literally make a note of every pint they drink, if they like it who's to judge? They're not harming anyone. There are people that keep track of every kind of bird they see, every meal the eat, collect pointless objects, etc. I see it as no different.

 

I see this thread as mostly a recommendation/keep your eye out for this beer kind of thing.

 

I guess my real feeling is if you don't like it, don't read the thread :whistle:

Yeah I just had a bad day. My above post was a bit wayward and thoughtless. Apologies.

 

The UK beer culture has always been around me I take it for granted, so many good beers at my doorstep (especially in terms of the size of other countries).

Bought myself some Bristol Beer Factory Ultimate Stout and Flying Dog Gonzo for this evening.

 

Not tried Gonzo yet but just tasted the Ultimate Stout and holy shit this is one of the best stouts I've ever had. If you ever come across it get a bottle!

 

EDIT: Just trying the Gonzo now, surprised how hoppy this is for an Imperial Porter. Not exactly the taste I'm looking for when I'm in the mood for a porter or stout, but it's a very tasty beer regardless.

That picture doesn't even include the fridge packed with the best beers that he introduced and passed around. Highlights included: Avery The Beast (2004 vintage). A test batch of Boulevard Brewing Co. Bourbon Barrel Quad from 2007, and their collaboration with Sierra Nevada that was only poured at SAVOR in D.C. earlier this year called Terra Incognita. I also had a few different Stone Brewing Co. Epic Verticals, Best by 11.09.12, and 10th Anniversary Ruination. Dogfish Head Bitches Brew, Ommegang Aphrodite, Deschutes Black Butte XX, XXIII, and XIV, and so many more....

 

I checked in to over 60 beers on untappd yesterday (add me up if you use it too) and that wasn't even all of them. It was an awesome time all around, tons of amazing beers, lots of good food, and lots of cool people!

had the beast on draft last night. it was intense, 6 ounces of it was almost too much. it was tasting quite liquory at 16.83%. i liked it, though probably not worth the price tag to me. any idea what aging the bottle for 8 years would do to the flavor?

 

bitches brew and black butte XIV are high on my list of beers to try, but they are both so expensive. how were they?

 

also had jolly pumpkin la parcela no.1 sour pumpkin ale on draft. definitely not a combination i would have considered previously. the flavor was very interesting, but i would have liked more sourness. jolly pumpkin has some pretty unique brews, i got to try a bunch at the GABF this year. it's a shame they are usually like $20 a bottle at the liquor store.

I see Jolly Pumpkins at my local beer store anywhere from $12.99 to $16.99 depending on the style. $20 is just obscene price gouging, even for sours which are usually the most expensive. But they are one of my favorite breweries ever. The La Roja and the Oro De Calabaza are just too awesome, been too long since I've had either of those.

I had an epic night last night. There was an event called Robtoberfest, hosted by the owner of the best liquor store here in Wichita, Goebels Liquor. Over 400 beers, most of which you can't buy here in KS, plus beers from his personal cellar.

It was pretty informal, just pick whichever beers you wanted to try and pour a few ounces for yourself. I had to take a break and eat some food after about 5 hours. Even with 1-2 ounce samples I still probably drank 6-8 12oz beers, and most of the beers were pretty big, up around 8%+.

 

The Bitches Brew was decent, idk if I'd buy a bottle if I had the chance. The 8 year old Beast was delicious, some mellow alcohol, lots of spiciness and caramel to it. Rob, the host, had been in contact with Adam Avery who said he was excited to hear about it after 8 years of aging. The anniversary Black Buttes are always tasty, well worth the price if it's $16-18/bomber

 

I also had quite a few Jolly Pumpkin beers, sadly their distributor pulled out of Kansas a couple years ago so we don't get them anymore. La Parcela was awesome, they really don't make anything bad imo though.

seconded on the Bitches' Brew.

 

As a self-proclaimed Dogfish aficionado, the best IMHO of the large specialty beers are:

 

Positive Contact (new one-sorta winter ale/cider concoction)

Burton Baton (90min IPA aged in Bourbon casks)

Hellhound (90min IPA with lemon peel and some other spices)

SahTea (fucking delicious...tastes like ginger snaps)

 

as you can tell anything even remotely involving the 90min IPA is gold in my eyes. Ive now had a ton of different IPAs in my life, and the 90min just hits the perfect spot for me....the Brooklyn IPA and the Southern Tier unfiltered IPA come pretty close though

part of the hefeweizen winter variety pack for their pyramid brand. a smooth and sweet stout with a mixture of coffee, black licorice and dark chocolate tastes.

 

I've heard of pyramid beer, supposed to be rather excellent.

 

I apologise but I went to the corner shop and bought 4 cans of stella. I drank all my excellent beer on the weekend on draught down the local pub (Rebellion Roasted Nuts, a minor classic and largely unknown outside of my Shire). It must be noted that Stella although common as muck in England is a posh beer in places like Australia or perhaps Chad lol.

The Brooklyn Octoberfest has been great this year!

 

In other news, a brewpub type deal just opened near my parents in PA. They brew fantastic small batches of beer in a range of areas. The table favorite from last night was

 

ZOMBIE: Double India Black Ale. 11.0%. Brewed with local wildflower honey and dry-hopped twice. Hopped with Simcoe, Centennial, and Nelson Sauvin.

-Notes of intense citrus, pine sap, white grape skin, and bittersweet baker’s chocolate.

 

Gorgeous. The hoppiest beer I've ever liked (normally hate IPAs). But this one's dark & sweet & complex enough to balance it out. Another fascinating candidate:

 

Westy13: Strong dark Saison. 13%. Brewed with just enough caramel malts and boiled for almost five hours in our direct-fire kettle. Conditioned for five month in one of our dish-bottom fermenters. This beer is gorgeous.

-Notes of Pinot Noir skins, toffee, melon, sticky raisins, and a hint of vanilla.

 

This shit is smooth as hell and would probably sneak up on you like an angry bill collector with a sock full of nickels. I only had 4oz so I could stay alert. Lovely herby flavor.

 

Dudes are serious. They make a good batch of beer and once they're out, they move on to a new recipe. On the off chance any of you is near Ardmore, PA I can't recommend this strongly enough.

I think its rather wonderful we live in such times where great beer abounds.

 

When I first got into 'real ale' I was about 17, I bought some bottles of Theakstons Old Peculier (before the family split when it was the original stuff) from a posh wine merchant in town. He used to import a few bottles of German beer and get a few British specialities in too. This isn't suppposed to sound like some old boring war story but these bottles of weird beer were so tasty but back then 'real ale' as we call it in the UK was as trendy as hog roast in Mecca. Wasn't happening at all. So its cool so many people get into all this nowadays.
