Tablets that aren't iPads

There was a 50% sale on and I just picked up a beautiful little Blackberry Playbook 64gb, 180 quid bargain.

Still working my around it but it seems very nice. Flash and all, the browsing is a good experience and its only a 7" screen so very portable. Front and back cameras which seem to be very good quality.

Anyone have any other brands? I saw a nice looking Samsung but that was over 300 quid, fuck that.

i have a hacked up nook color that is a fun little bugger. not the speediest or largest (7") and no camera or mic, but for $130 or so I didn't go wrong.

I want the Asus Prime with the keyboard but it's pricey. Totally worth it though. My friend has one, it's fucking money.

I saw that, fairly expensive. Looks very cool though.

Nexus 7

I love it.

Its advertisted as the $199 tablet, why is it so expensive here? It was 260 quid here, what did you pay if you dont mind saying.

I paid £200 for mine, direct from Google.

Dunno why it's so expensive for you :-\

I was looking at 3rd party sells, like PC world etc.

Probably is 200 quid direct from google.

Yeah, even PC World here are selling it for £200. Only place I've seen that is selling it for more than the RRP is Amazon, strangely enough...

Yeah pretty awesome. And the extra battery life from the keyboard is astounding. Perfect for a student or if you have to go to meetings often.

Just bought one for my dad's birthday but apparently he's not getting on with it. Supposedly it has an issue with Flash in-browser. I showed him a work-around, but I'll have to have a better go tomorrow. Something about an installation file just not being copied during Flash installation or something.

If he still can't handle it I'm nicking it though.

i was researching that earlier last year. i think the best one i found was the kobo. scrolling is too fucking slow on them for me, though. i ended up getting a nook tablet and it's great. glare isn't bad (which was my main worry) and the battery life is fantastic. my only disappointment is that the software for annotating and highlighting is kinda tempermental on pdfs. it works for most pdfs but on some it won't work at all so i end up printing them out cause i'm anal about annotating the papers i read. other than that, it's highly recommended.

edit: i also like its size. some tablets are way too big. my nook can fit in my purse.

Isn't the newest one called Infinity? My gf wants one of those with the keyboard dock. I'm loving my Nexus7 too. Posting from it right now in fact.

posting from an ipad with a wireless keyboard case

nexus 7 looks cool imo

but i really do enjoy this ipad. i wouldn't have ever bought one myself, i'm far too cheap for that, but it was a gift from a strange wealthy aunt i never see and i'm pretty damn glad she gave this sucker to me. the keyboard case was a self-chrimbo gift and has made this thing really nice for school.

This!

If you're thinking of buying any other tablet besides this one, you're making a terrible decision. Amazing tablet, and ridiculously cheap. You can buy two Nexus 7s for the price you would pay for one iPad. The only significant thing the iPad has over the 7 is a much higher ppi. Personally, I consider the 7 inch screen WAY better than a massive 10 inch screen. I also don't really care about the 3G connectivity and to be honest any reason to not be dealing with a carrier at this point is a good one.

Nexus 7 has a better GPU and a faster CPU, and the best version of the vastly superior Android OS. I could write at length as to why Android has far surpassed iOS. I just won't do it unsolicited.

Asus Tranformer cant handle my browsing habits, crashes like a mofo. For instance, on pages with lots of embedded flash (forget about youtube threads). Often hangs on pages for no apparent reason. Requires soundcloud to be it's own app..

I wanted an Ipad 3 so bad but eventually received as a gift a galaxy tab. Let me tell you I was so disapointed I couln't hide it but then, I fell inlove with it and now claim publicly that I'm against apple products. This galaxy tab is very good, although Android can't handle music making apps very well. I'm still waiting for Animoog to be released on Android.

But what do people DO with tablets? I mean, if you have a smartphone and a computer, where does the tablet come in?

enlighten me, watmm.

As a student, I would love one. reading and annotating/highlighting PDFs on the bus, great for taking notes (with keyboard), decent size screen for watching trailer park boys episodes whilst eating lunch, playing "casual games". And before you say laptop - my 13" macbook weighs a fuck of a lot more than a tablet, is way more inconvenient for reading on the bus. Netbooks tend to be underpowered and make fan sounds like a balding german man in an anorak listening to the latest autechre.

So yeah - tablet.

This is my experience basically. I received an old first-generation iPad as a gift recently, but I barely use it between my smartphone and my laptop. The only time it became really useful was when I went on holiday, it was nice to have something smaller and lighter than a laptop to slip into my shoulder bag for watching TV shows and browsing the web in my hotel room. But I don't travel much, so it's not that important for my needs.

Another vote for the Nexus 7. I've had it for just over a month and it's brilliant, I use it all the time. I'm a dumbphone user, and I can definitely understand why people with smartphones would question the merits of a tablet. But this has pretty much replaced my Samsung netbook (not that it needed replacing, it's lasted amazingly well...). The Nexus 7 is a terrific little device.

One thing I'm waiting for is offline-editing for Google docs (now part of Google Drive) - sadly the Drive app won't presently allow you to create or edit a document unless you're connected to wifi, which isn't always the case if I'm at a conference or seminar and want to take some notes. Anyone have any tips for offline text editors in the interim? All the ones I've found seem pretty poor, and don't integrate with Google Drive.

For UKers: I'm actually also waiting for BBC iPlayer to fix their app following the whole Flash withdrawal fiasco. They keep saying an update is imminent though. There is an easy workaround, but the video quality is dreadful and very unsatisfactory.
