Annihilation - Wouldn't say it's bad but just a little disappointing and typical of a film trying to shoe-horn in everything from the book (no i havn't read it), felt like there was no development, just new scene after new scene with little to introduce or close them...lots of wide coverage shots, no close up details and textures to such you into the universe. Felt like the interview scenes with natalie portman were unnecessary and could have been taken out...could have been great, just perhaps trying to do too much justice to the book?


Paddington 2 - this is absolutely great fun! Highly recommend if you want some gentle fun escapism...

More in reply to goDel: every team that had gone before all died, except her 'husband' that came back, obviously very much not in an okay state. I forget how many teams they stated/implied in the movie or in the book, but it was a significant amount in both iirc. You don't sign up for a mission like that expecting to all come back alive. You might hope, but if teams of trained soldiers had gone in before, what makes you think you're going to stand a chance against whatever it is in there? The premise is that taking a mission like that at all is a deathwish. I thought that was pretty obvious.

yeah i just re-watched the movie and they stress that pretty well... anyway, there's artistic decisions in the movie that are simply bad taste, it's not a question of budget... was going to post some screen captures of examples but can't be arsed to do it, there's no point in discussing this further... i'm not talking about bad cgi, i didn't thought it was that bad were it needed to be realistic... still, that scene in the end where the mandelbulb starts to take form and the theme music kicks in and the humanoid scene are pretty fantastic there's no point in denying that, besides those scenes the best visuals are actually in the end credits lol... looks like it borrows a bit from cronenberg too, the mutations and whatnot...

Who cares when the ambiguities & ambivalence leave the questions wide open & multi-layered, plus the editing is such an entertaining world of its own. Lee Marvin is the man & Boorman's Deliverance, Zardoz & Excalibur are all up there too. 9.5/10

 

Cross of Iron - Peckinpah & James Coburn do WWII from an alternative angle of the Wehrmacht. Another watched after a decade or more, although WWII filems have some incredible competition with The Ascent or Come And See. Not in that league, but still a solid 8/10

 

Paths of Glory - last but not least of this particular binge & from 1957, when US film-makers were collectively knee deep making Cold-War propaganda bs, faking myths & archetypes of a fictional American West w/John Wayne et al, Kubrick sets things str8. The advance wave attack through a cratered Luna no man's land is as good as it gets, plus the fkn ending, ooooph, 9/10,

one of them died, the other one didn't want to continue and got really pissed of by the rest of the team continuing but died soon afterwards, one of them just went with the flow because she wasn't going to go back alone, the leader had cancer and therefore a deathwish, and the biologist obviously wanted to know what happened to her boyfriend and bring back some kind of cure... besides the fact that none of them had nothing to lose, that was implied in the chat that 2 of them had in the canoe...

Molly's Game - Aaron Sorkin still doesn't know how people talk, every character is Aaron Sorkin. Tobey Maguire was a real prick, Cera was great, as was Jessica Chastain's cleavage.

 

Black Panther - loved the design, music was good, the action scenes weren't great though, most of the jokes fell pretty flat. Also, Martin Freeman's accent was terrible.

 

Finally watched Wiener Dog. I meant to see it in the cinema when it came out and didn't get around to it. Had it dloaded since then and forgot about it.

Had a really shitty and depressing day and remembered I had it. A Solondz movie always cheers me up, probably in the most unhealthy way.

Loved it. I see he has a new one out this year, can't wait.

Gonna rewatch Happiness tonight for the 900th time.

More in reply to goDel: every team that had gone before all died, except her 'husband' that came back, obviously very much not in an okay state. I forget how many teams they stated/implied in the movie or in the book, but it was a significant amount in both iirc. You don't sign up for a mission like that expecting to all come back alive. You might hope, but if teams of trained soldiers had gone in before, what makes you think you're going to stand a chance against whatever it is in there? The premise is that taking a mission like that at all is a deathwish. I thought that was pretty obvious.

In the first book the teams didn’t die, they reappeared in different places outside the zone or whatever it’s called. it’s basically just stalker right?
