If going back wasn't an option - after having been a week there without any recollection - why should continuing going forward be an option? It's not like they forgot about where to go.

they lost sense of time innit?

at least i think that's what spi's implying...

color me stupid. i don't think that'd be an argument to not go back. on contrary. they lost sense of time. and they were aware of it. so why venture forward? doesn't make sense to me. and it doesn't make sense as an argument to not go back. again, color me stupid. if you can explain, i'm all ears.

because it's a dep movie about self destruction and they wer all sad and depressed so they all wanted to die horrifying deaths because all people self destruct and they touch the alien to make it self destruct because deep movie motivation subtelty

that makes some sense. thx!

lol

No

Actually I just downloaded this Indonesian movie called Macabre that seems promising.

I've seen that, did the directors help with a short in VHS or something? I remember nothing about it sadly.

I don't know if what Gocab is talking about has anything to do with that V/H/S 2 short but fuck me I loved that. Such a great dreamlike, urgent sense of dread that never let up. I was just thinking about that the other day. I need to rewatch it ASAP. Daytime horror is the best.

Annihilation - Wouldn't say it's bad but just a little disappointing and typical of a film trying to shoe-horn in everything from the book (no i havn't read it), felt like there was no development, just new scene after new scene with little to introduce or close them...lots of wide coverage shots, no close up details and textures to such you into the universe. Felt like the interview scenes with natalie portman were unnecessary and could have been taken out...could have been great, just perhaps trying to do too much justice to the book?

Paddington 2 - this is absolutely great fun! Highly recommend if you want some gentle fun escapism...

More in reply to goDel: every team that had gone before all died, except her 'husband' that came back, obviously very much not in an okay state. I forget how many teams they stated/implied in the movie or in the book, but it was a significant amount in both iirc. You don't sign up for a mission like that expecting to all come back alive. You might hope, but if teams of trained soldiers had gone in before, what makes you think you're going to stand a chance against whatever it is in there? The premise is that taking a mission like that at all is a deathwish. I thought that was pretty obvious.

yeah i just re-watched the movie and they stress that pretty well... anyway, there's artistic decisions in the movie that are simply bad taste, it's not a question of budget... was going to post some screen captures of examples but can't be arsed to do it, there's no point in discussing this further... i'm not talking about bad cgi, i didn't thought it was that bad were it needed to be realistic... still, that scene in the end where the mandelbulb starts to take form and the theme music kicks in and the humanoid scene are pretty fantastic there's no point in denying that, besides those scenes the best visuals are actually in the end credits lol... looks like it borrows a bit from cronenberg too, the mutations and whatnot...

dvd orgy cos of lurgy:

Point Blank - havent watched for eons & its lost none of its punch. Is it a dream, or the visions of a dying man? Who cares when the ambiguities & ambivalence leave the questions wide open & multi-layered, plus the editing is such an entertaining world of its own. Lee Marvin is the man & Boorman's Deliverance, Zardoz & Excalibur are all up there too. 9.5/10

Cross of Iron - Peckinpah & James Coburn do WWII from an alternative angle of the Wehrmacht. Another watched after a decade or more, although WWII filems have some incredible competition with The Ascent or Come And See. Not in that league, but still a solid 8/10

Paths of Glory - last but not least of this particular binge & from 1957, when US film-makers were collectively knee deep making Cold-War propaganda bs, faking myths & archetypes of a fictional American West w/John Wayne et al, Kubrick sets things str8. The advance wave attack through a cratered Luna no man's land is as good as it gets, plus the fkn ending, ooooph, 9/10,

  • 00:57:32,574 --> 00:57:34,743
  • - I didn't realize there were sides.
  • - Yeah.
  •
  • 658
  • 00:57:35,118 --> 00:57:36,078
  • Yeah, there are sides.
  •
  • 659
  • 00:57:37,371 --> 00:57:40,207
  • Okay, then I agree with you.
  • We should go back.
  •
  • 660
  • 00:57:41,083 --> 00:57:43,126
  • Good. Okay, great. There we go. Okay?
  •
  • 661
  • 00:57:43,210 --> 00:57:45,504
  • - So the three of us can...
  • - Hold on a minute.
  •
  • 662
  • 00:57:45,587 --> 00:57:46,964
  • We should go back, yes.
  •
  • 663
  • 00:57:47,047 --> 00:57:49,216
  • But it took us, what,
  • six days to get here?
  •
  • 664
  • 00:57:49,591 --> 00:57:51,927
  • And the coast is two days away.
  •
  • 665
  • 00:57:52,928 --> 00:57:55,347
  • And as Sheppard said...
  •
  • 666
  • 00:57:56,348 --> 00:57:59,726
  • when we get to the coast,
  • we can follow it until the perimeter wall.
  •
  • 667
  • 00:58:00,185 --> 00:58:01,937
  • You're saying we get out
  • by going deeper?
  •
  • 668
  • 00:58:02,688 --> 00:58:04,690
  • - Yeah, if you like, yeah.
  • - "Like"?
  •
  • 669
  • 00:58:05,065 --> 00:58:07,693
  • No, I don't fucking "like."
  •
  • 670
  • 00:58:12,155 --> 00:58:14,783
  • This isn't some bullshit tactic
  • to get us to the lighthouse, is it?
  •
  • 671
  • 00:58:14,866 --> 00:58:17,202
  • This is not about the lighthouse, okay?
  •
  • 672
  • 00:58:17,995 --> 00:58:20,038
  • I believe that the coast
  • is the best route out.
  •
  • 673
  • 00:58:24,835 --> 00:58:25,669
  • Okay?
  •
  • 674
  • 00:58:39,224 --> 00:58:40,225
  • You lied to them.
  •
  • 675
  • 00:58:43,645 --> 00:58:45,689
  • I didn't know what going back meant.
  •
  • 676
  • 00:58:46,398 --> 00:58:48,859
  • Why it would be safer than going forward.
  •
  • 677
  • 00:58:50,110 --> 00:58:53,780
  • You didn't know, but you made
  • a decision to continue as if you did.
  •
  • 678
  • 00:58:53,947 --> 00:58:55,282
  • Ventress made the decision.
  •
  • 679
  • 00:58:55,365 --> 00:58:58,160
  • Ventress had cancer.
  • She was never coming back.
  •
  • 680
  • 00:58:59,494 --> 00:59:00,829
  • You knew she was sick.
  •
  • 681
  • 00:59:01,747 --> 00:59:02,664
  • I had guessed.
  •
  • 682
  • 00:59:06,084 --> 00:59:07,711
  • And you wanted to continue.
  •
  • 683
  • 00:59:09,963 --> 00:59:10,797
  • Yes.
  •
  • 684
  • 00:59:12,174 --> 00:59:13,008
  • I did.

you forgot to mention it was implied she was lying about going forward was the shortest path going back. as she admitted directly in the interview that followed that scene. which basically implied there wasn't any actual real reason going forwards, besides the "teamleader" having cancer and being driven by going towards her death anyways. and the biologist probably having a similar reason because her friend returned as some sort of zombi. so the self-destruct mode mentioned earlier seems like the most likely motiv in my eyes. The others in the team were basically following a lie and wanted to go out.

havent read the book btw

nvrmnd.: the part of the lie is in there in your quote.

no i didn't, maybe you didn't read it till the end:

i really don't think there's anything here to point fingers at...

one of them died, the other one didn't want to continue and got really pissed of by the rest of the team continuing but died soon afterwards, one of them just went with the flow because she wasn't going to go back alone, the leader had cancer and therefore a deathwish, and the biologist obviously wanted to know what happened to her boyfriend and bring back some kind of cure... besides the fact that none of them had nothing to lose, that was implied in the chat that 2 of them had in the canoe...

and the boyfriend didn't return as some kind of zombie, the boyfriend was the thing...

from her perspective before she understood what happened to him he def appeared like some sort of zombi. (before she had been in the lighthouse herself)

lets not get to academic about it. as mentioned the self destruction mode made the most sense. so the argument about time passing faster than they could remember hasn't got anything to do with going forward. which was what i didnt understand or agree with.

edit: big thx for digging up the quotes though!

Molly's Game - Aaron Sorkin still doesn't know how people talk, every character is Aaron Sorkin. Tobey Maguire was a real prick, Cera was great, as was Jessica Chastain's cleavage.

Black Panther - loved the design, music was good, the action scenes weren't great though, most of the jokes fell pretty flat. Also, Martin Freeman's accent was terrible.

Finally watched Wiener Dog. I meant to see it in the cinema when it came out and didn't get around to it. Had it dloaded since then and forgot about it.

Had a really shitty and depressing day and remembered I had it. A Solondz movie always cheers me up, probably in the most unhealthy way.

Loved it. I see he has a new one out this year, can't wait.

Gonna rewatch Happiness tonight for the 900th time.

This is also in my growing list of unwatched downloads, must get around to it soon.

color me stupid. i don't think that'd be an argument to not go back. on contrary. they lost sense of time. and they were aware of it. so why venture forward? doesn't make sense to me. and it doesn't make sense as an argument to not go back. again, color me stupid. if you can explain, i'm all ears.

  • 639
  • 00:56:33,181 --> 00:56:34,224
  • We have to go back.
  • 640
  • 00:56:34,808 --> 00:56:37,060
  • - We have to go back now.
  • - She's right.
  • 641
  • 00:56:37,311 --> 00:56:39,062
  • Right? In what sense?
  • 642
  • 00:56:39,146 --> 00:56:40,606
  • We've been attacked twice.
  • 643
  • 00:56:40,856 --> 00:56:42,733
  • We lost one of our own.
  • 644
  • 00:56:42,816 --> 00:56:45,944
  • We have evidence the previous team

  • 645
  • 00:56:46,028 --> 00:56:48,447
  • I really don't know how much more right

  • 646
  • 00:56:48,530 --> 00:56:50,157
  • We haven't reached the lighthouse.
  • 647
  • 00:56:50,240 --> 00:56:53,160
  • We still don't understand the cause

  • 648
  • 00:56:53,243 --> 00:56:55,704
  • We have data, observations, photographs.

  • 649
  • 00:56:55,787 --> 00:56:59,499

  • 652

More in reply to goDel: every team that had gone before all died, except her 'husband' that came back, obviously very much not in an okay state. I forget how many teams they stated/implied in the movie or in the book, but it was a significant amount in both iirc. You don't sign up for a mission like that expecting to all come back alive. You might hope, but if teams of trained soldiers had gone in before, what makes you think you're going to stand a chance against whatever it is in there? The premise is that taking a mission like that at all is a deathwish. I thought that was pretty obvious.

In the first book the teams didn’t die, they reappeared in different places outside the zone or whatever it’s called. it’s basically just stalker right?
