On the hunt for contemporary scifi, found a film called TiMER. A film about a new device that attached to your brachical vein and countsdown to when you meet your one true love. Very attractive lead woman, but dialogue so cliched and the characters could have been created by Ronny Cox in the OCP boardroom. Still the US can produce some great scifi and this had hints of belief in innate good in people.

Europa Report, I liked it! There aren't very many movies I like.

right? I mean, there are some stronger and some weaker actors in it. The Spokeswoman who does the press conferences and some of the narration doesn't really do that good a job. But I somehow felt like the acting in general got better the further I got into the film. I don't know whether that was just me getting used to the style or whether they actually put on better performances later on. Maybe they shot it chronologically and got more involved or something. My girlfriend had to inform me one of the lead actors is the guy from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Michael Nygvist), I didn't even recognize him. Happens to me a lot.

Anyway, the facts that the filmmakers actually checked with NASA to make the film as scientifically correct as possible and that they involved Neil deGrasse are very sympathetic.

riddick

makes oblivion look like blade runner. i can't believe this was released in theaters. the effects were absurdly bad. the acting was uniformly horrendous. the whole movie seemed to have been shot with the actors in separate rooms in front of green screens. went in thinking it might be like a film version of a jack vance novel or one of those tor paperbacks you find in a used book bin at a library for a nickel. instead, one of the worst genre films i've ever seen.

Is it a well-known fact that the sound design on his predecessor (Pitch Black) was in fact done by Robert Rich?

i liked these films the first time around but find all his cuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzyyyyyyyyyyyy films really difficult to watch now.

i think i prefer to just ignore them and focus on the better ones he's done since like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the Truman Show.

Upstream Color is a film written, directed, and produced by Shane Carruth.[2] The film is the second feature directed by Carruth, best known for his 2004 debut Primer.[3]Upstream Color stars Carruth, Amy Seimetz, Andrew Sensenig, and Thiago Martins.

Upstream Color is about two people whose lives and behaviors are affected by a complex parasite—without knowing it—that has a three-stage life cycle in which it passes from humans to pigs to orchids.[4] "A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives."

i really enjoyed this film and thought both the story and performances were really strong, however i did find it a little rascist that the badies were non-white. 7/10

Watched The Master again. Seriously this film gets better and better with every viewing. Most definitely a modern classic. So beautifully shot, so tightly written and so well acted. 10/10

i'm starting to agree. a singular film.

yup. definitely a grower

The Bling Ring - lol these people actually exists. It takes too long for them to get their comeupins. Sofia Coppola needs to fucking edit her movies, some scenes are totally unnecessary, long and uncomfortable. 7/10 (it was entertaining a bit and comical at times)

Maniac - I don't usually like horror movies that dont involve something paranormal (because usually for the most part are slasher porn) but this one i found really interesting and genuinely scary (there is something about a serial killer in the city that sends shivers down my spine), i recommend - 8/10

what do you mean the badies? there was an indian looking guy who was one of the 'badies' but the main badie was a bald white pig farmer who was mostly running the show.

i don't there is a point, apparently according to David Lynch at one time it was Stanely Kubrick's favorite movie, i can almost believe it but I'm not sure I 100% believe that

have you seen Inland Empire? That's probably the only other movie he made that equals the intensity and uncomfortableness of Eraserhead

but he was extracting the worms and had no direct connection to the hypnotic extortionist guy, the other guy was using them to manipulate people and take their cash.

It was an observation not an outright judgement (shared by a friend with Indian heritage I went to see this with). I also know several minority background actors who get tired of this kind of racial stereotyping when trying to find work so maybe I'm highly tuned in to it. If the film is interpreted as an allegory (which it could be due to the content) this could be viewed as very negative. I'm not saying it was necessarily a deliberate move, but you need yo be aware of these interpretations when making important casting choices.

I've been missing some new scifi in my life so I went ahead and watched Oblivion and Europa Report. I mostly agree with what's been said about both. Oblivion was pretty, entertaining and stupid. Tom Cruise looked and acted like Zoolander throughout so I had some trouble taking things seriously. Saw the "twist" coming from the get go. 6/10, mostly for the visuals. Iceland is nice. Makes me want to go back. yeah. hello Iceland.

Europa Report was pretty good for a low budget sci-fi flick, the editing was balls in places, and the crew was rather uninteresting. Still, A for effort. Shame about the ending, I wish they'd gone for something a little more low-key. 6/10, mostly because sci-fi fanboy.

Is there any watchable recent sci fi out there (I'm talking the last year or two here)? Perhaps there's something happening in anime? Haven't followed that scene in ages.

Anchorman 10/10 obviously

Dodgeball 6.5/10 some really funny lines in this but also quite a few tumbleweed moments. must be watched with drunk friends for full appreciation.

Kung Fu Hustle 7.5/10 In Shanghai, China in the 1940s, a wannabe gangster aspires to join the notorious "Axe Gang" while residents of a housing complex exhibit extraordinary powers in defending their turf. this is a really fun kung fu movie, the director/writer/producer/lead actor (according to the credits) is very good but unfortunately hasn't done anything of note since (he also made Shaolin Soccer before this film which i actually prefer although i don't really like football/soccer much)

Eraserhead. 89 minutes of uncomfortable filmmaking. I'm either completely missing the point or there is no point. Anyone care to weigh in?

It's like a nightmare - it's a projection of anxiety, about love and sex and birth and marriage. It's in a sort of dream world. It's less about making a point and more about connecting with that unconscious realm. The monster baby is just the projection of the central characters fear that he wont love the baby and wont be able to care for it. There's more to the film than that though.

The song - in heaven, everything is fine - note the specifically benign word - when I have songs in my dreams, they always have these kind of lyrics. There's something so strange about that to me - in heaven, everything is fine. This kind of vapid contentment, this empty wisdom, attracting him to this woman who you can tell is a projection of his desire by the overly conspicuous cheeks (mock sweetnees), seeking oblivion (his head blows off). It's the compulsion to stupid satisfaction - a safe, peaceful life.

I think it's basically about someone being terrified by what he is trying to ignore - that this image of life - wife, kids, family, contentment - has some element of stupid compulsion to it - and he is unable to fulfil his role as a husband, as a father, as an adult

Everything is somehow outside his control, he doesn't even see that he is unable to assert himself or cope with what faces him, but he unconsciously senses it, and it traumatizes him
