Vaporwave

Nebraska

Recommended Posts

try listening to the tunes, there's more going on than just taking other tracks and slowing them down... that was just a quick summary by Nebraska

(i'm not going to become a defender of this "genre" fyi, so if you have an axe to grind i'll kindly step out of the way)

No worries. Yea I actually didn't even see the Nebraska post but looks to be the

same sentiment. I feel I've listened to quite a bit at this point and most seems to be a copy/paste job.

It is just odd seeing accolades thrown at people for things they aren't even doing, and yet they play

into it...it's like the whole thing is based on suspension of disbelief.

I first stumbled across this via Vektroid earlier this year. She, along with a few others,

goes beyond the simplicity and creates some really great original compositions.

I enjoy the concept I just wish it was better represented.

Well Vektroid's releases comprise about half or more of all vaporwave that actually gets any attention, so there's that.

I definitely like vaporware when it's done artfully. but a lot of it is inherently hateful of art in a capitalist environment. i've said thsi but nobody fucking understands because they'er not smart. but i said it DIRECTLY referring to this movement, which I also have bee nwatchnig as a thoughtful musician, HOOOOOOOOOOO oh yeah.. oh yeah..

it's expressionism vs pop art

and expressionism is better. in every way.

I dunno why everyone is balking about microgenres so much. People bounce sounds and new ideas off of each other all the time; these microgenres are just an acknowledgement of that team effort to create a new 'sound.' Recall decades past: Small creative wellsprings crop up, but they were geographic, centered in cities or neighborhoods ("scenes"). A scene gets big enough, and the media latches onto it, everyone would get excited, have the same conversation we're having now, and then it would fade away, its creative vision dissected by new subgenres and scenes, until something "new" popped up again, in some other place. Two things have happened since then. 1. The scene's need for a central geographic location is gone. The internet has replaced it. 2. Scenes do not need to grow to a big enough size for the media to care before they spread. They spread almost immediately now. We - the listeners - interpret this as oversaturation. Really, though, the reach of the amateur has extended, that's all. Blooming scenes like "witch house" or "vaporwave" come and go much quicker now; they are the scenes that probably wouldn't have gained the sort of mainstream attention that grunge or (god help us) "nu-metal" did in the 90s. Those genres largely sucked too, btw. Nu metal always sucks.

As for ganus' issue (that people will simply make music within genre confines instead of being creative) -- that has more to do with people themselves and their creative confidence than it does with whatever microgenres are happening around them. Derivative music is easy and often really fun to make - you know what you're aiming for, you know how to do it (or at least how other people do it), and you know what people like - the only thing left is to put your personal mark on it. Acid music is a blast to make but it's not very creatively inspired at this point, same with most long-standing electronic genres.

tldr - imo the microgenres aren't prohibiting creativity; we're all just getting a closer look at how music scenes (now virtual, previously local) develop, and it's not always very attractive. It's all hipster garbage until time sorts it out; either sift through it yourself or wait for the verdict to come in later.
I don't think there's an intrinsic belief of any 'microgenre artists' that they need to trend-hop in order to be heard, though of course some artists believe that. Some artists believe they'll be discovered if only they sound like aphex twin, too. Riding the hype train is just what uncreative people do; that doesn't mean that new, still-emerging sounds are bad.
Vaporwave is an interesting sound imo, and there's definitely a good chunk of it I find unappealing... but some of it is great, and like nothing I would have come up with if left to my own devices. I got nothing against that.

There was a point where I realized I am a huge sucker for classic reggae, down to just about every fucking dub of the same song, and just about every absurdly overused riddim.

And of course I wouldn't be a true Texan if I didn't cite DJ Screw

Pretty embarrassing it took until November for watmm to get in on this. oi vei.

It's also generally bad for any genre when you have to say genre name to start talking about it. Best to just start you know, like posting the tracks and talking about the music in the genre rather than saying "heard of this __ sound". That's what kills genres. (I.E. Dubstep, everything, etc.)

I had noticed this kind of music as a trend for going on two years now, but only fairly recently became aware it had been designated its own genre

Actually I really first started noticing it about 3 years ago when I started experimenting with taking my own tracks resampling them into new tracks (without being aware of OPN or Clams Casino or anything like that), & a lot of the sounds I discovered there were kinda sorta like what I would soon start hearing from the vaporwave people, so I have to wonder if there might have been some "everyone inventing the telephone at once" thing going on

Doubt I'll ever actually do anything in this genre. As much as I like the sound of old media being chopped & looped all funny like, the idea of taking someone else's tracks & editing them into my own tracks feels kinda like, iunno, home invasion

*gets angry and shakes fist at the idea of a fake genre using one of my favorite words in completely the wrong context*

Vaporware is a term in the computer industry that describes a product, typically computer hardware or software, that is announced to the general public but is never actually released nor officially cancelled.

I'd be interested to see how vaporwave would take a mainstream path similar to dubstep. It'll probably end up with heavy sample cut-ups of Jersey Shore or Keeping up with the Kardashians.

I didn't read thread, every one knows Vaporwave is just a variation of Eccojams which has been around for a while right? It's the link between lean/chop n screw to vaporwave.
(see Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. #) (Aka Dan Loptain aka Onheotix Point Never) (aka hip)

the youtube videos can be pretty cool. i think it should be a youtube genre instead of a music genre

Yeah the visuals are pretty essential.

I think it's really philosophically negative music though. Kind of nihilistic when you get to the nuts and bolts of it. Deconstructionist. Same with witch house; sucks the meaning and purpose out of symbols and songs and such.

I mean if you like one non-eccojams and non-vektroid vaporwave album you like them all, they're all pretty much the same. There's also about a million of them. If you wanna keep up with the scene for some reason, subscribe to this guy on Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/jonomilo

and these youtube channels:

http://www.youtube.com/user/MrNONSENSE2010 (this guy posts TONS of new and mostly free releases from all the chillwave subgenres)

http://www.youtube.com/user/99possums (same guy as that Facebook account)

http://www.youtube.com/user/hundredollars

http://www.youtube.com/user/SEWAGETAPES (according to jono this label is total assholes, but good music so whatever)

http://www.youtube.com/user/StergiosINred

http://www.youtube.com/user/sunsetcorp (this is Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never)

http://www.youtube.com/user/b0dyg0d

http://www.youtube.com/user/EEGPROGRAMS (doesn't really upload anymore but has some cool stuff)

And while not really part of "the scene", this is a pretty cool and related channel:
