was gonna say "damn mang slow down the slideshow", but then I realized it perfectly captured that feel, of an autistic 12 year old who makes a big "stock images for homework" folder on the family computer to hide his porn in (porn he founding googling "big boobs" on bing safemode), but then he gets really invested in collecting stock images & forgets the original purpose. Eventually he decides to make a youtube video to show off all his favourites but the song he downloaded off Kazaa is only 104 seconds long so he just gangbangs 'em all in there

btw, i forget if you mentioned it, but are you a music making type previous to this? Because this track (tonally very ndc) actually has a nice little progression to it

one thing that hasn't really been discussed is that by sampling lots of synth-rnb and new jack swing and whatnot people are showing that they like those jazzy chords and such. Lots of guys don't have the know-how to understand those chord progressions and piano phrasings so they are making grasps in the dark to reclaim lost theory knowledge.

also I'm going to post a new find every day:

I think I've realized that the difference to me between "real" vaporwave and other things is the feel of the beat structure and intent in how it's made. It seems like many of the artists who try to make "vaporwave" just can't resist putting a hip hop beat under everything they do to make it danceable or accessible, and I think it ruins it for me because it totally changes the feel of the track. I even like it most of the time, but it just wears off so fast because it sounds like something DJ Shadow made in the 90s, just with a different sample source. Vaporwave, to me, is about the over dramatization and destructive parodying of the sample source. It's much darker than the newer stuff. The newer stuff is about making a cool beat from an 80s sample source or internet-era sample source. In that way $hane's Swagot Trilltpe is closer to vaporwave than Saint Pepsi's 80s-style disco, and why I think that the new Torn Hawk is also very similar.

Both can be fun music but they are aesthetically different. Some things sort of fall on both sides, like Blank Banshee's newest album. Also note that there's a difference between using a well produced hip hop beat over an 80s track and creating or sampling a hip hop beat as a form of "parody" of the source.

broporwave is keatscollective

haha yes. keatscollective is kind of nice though.

haha! Glad you got the feel that i was going for (:

Thanks man, I appreciate it... Yeah, I write and produce an eclectic array of music- mostly synthpop/hip hop/indie disco stuff, but i like to mess around with different styles.

so anyway, yeah, i was just meddling around on my midi controller, reaching around for chords and melodies that would fit that theme of workplace success, team building, moving forward, etc etc that you'd hear in some lame corporate training video from 1989 or something.

I'm definitely planning on making some more Donovan Hikaru material... I already have an idea for the next track/vid.. I think I'll stick to the similar tired theme of the corporate workplace.

Yeah, there isn't a lot of theory discovery going on.

Also, that is definitely broporwave. I don't think it will ruin vaporwave like brostep ruined dubstep though. I really don't.

Here is some broporwave:

That was 2 months ago. But Games already cased out that "Spend the Night" track in 2010.

what's broperwave, slowing down (but doing absolutely nothing else to) the wrong type of song? vs using a cool track or something? I couldn't tell if that was a sarcastic jokey term invented in this thread or not. Either way the thread or possibly the genre itself is like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

why is everyone looking for a definition of everything. You guys are looking for explanations where there is one. If someone labels their music 'broporwave' obviously it's a tongue in cheek self-deprecating move for the sake of sarcastic silliness. Or maybe not. Who cares anyway?

let me just state for the record, that in theory i think the way people have idealized this genre, the template described eloquently by some in this thread lends itself to some very cool possibilities. I think Lane Visitor, Salvitorin, Spore and a few other watmmers could make a watmm vaporware compilation that would actually kick a lot of this music's ass in a serious way. I'm obviously not the right person to do it because of my haterdom but someone should start an open submission vaporwave comp on watmm.

broporwave is just a joke. but it could refer to a real thing. John Ehrlichman, you said so a page or 2 back, and furnished an example. gmanyo also seems to think there is the "good stuff" and the bad stuff. that is what a lot of the dialogue has been about in this thread.

if you listen to the "GOOD" vaporwave--most people would rank Chuck Person and Internet Club pretty highly(duh)--you can immediately discern it from a lot of this derivative (get it?) vaporwave that is literally just slowing down this song:

I am not trying to define anything. I've been listening to this vein heavily since 2010. I'm more interested in the enduring concepts than the various levels of success at which they are realized. I didn't even know the term until a few months ago, but I knew the imagery/concepts/music, and I was really happy with that.

hahaha that song, that's perfect

Anyway, I don't really think any of the music is bad per se, I just don't like it very much and think that it is more similar to other forms of music than it is to macintosh plus and the like. And often I like it anyway. I mean I'm always the pretentious asshole who says stuff sucks (I'm known for this among my friends) but honestly it doesn't matter.
