Hi guys,

Torn between both of these lovelies...

Looking for mainly ambient techo if that helps.. something that has good leads and drums..

I think the sampler would be a pain because I'd have to record sounds right?

Which do you think would be easier to use and more bang for the buck?

thanks

since it uses an SD card you could just put the card in your computer and load it up with whatever samples you want. man those things look stupid with the tubes though

you mean "stoopid" right? like good?

Personally I would 100% pick the one that has the sampler. That would mean that at any time you could hook up another piece of gear to it and feed it stuff.

Yeah, I'd 100% go for the ESX as well. I have both an EMX and ESX. Probably going to sell the EMX at some point. The ESX is my most used hardware. The PCM drums on the EMX leave much to be desired.

I can't tell about the blue one because I just have the red, but what I can tell is that it's also my most used hardware box (not that I'm owning a lot of hardware stuff though..). I use the Electribe SX sometimes in a jam configuration, where it appears to be extremely good for inspiration because of its simple workflow, which still allow creativity and a lot of tweaking options. I didn't use it like that so much lately but it has often been my draft-gear, for elaborating basic tracks ideas, ideas which I reproduced later in a more powerful configuration (Reaper + Renoise rewired in case someone is interested to know).

The other way I use this box is as an "expander" in my Reaper / Renoise sessions : the computer outputs some midi to the synths of the Electribe, which I record while I'm tweaking them. Even if - once again - I don't have huge experience with hardware synths, I can tell that the sound isn't the most crazy you'll can find, but the Electribe is responsible for synths sounds in my tracks that I'm very proud of. Sending midi in it (and so getting rid of its internal sequencer, which is OK but not marvelous) and recording it as you're tweaking the knobs can really deliver.

And concerning the tubes, I'm not sure how they look but what I'm sure is that I always use them when I'm recording because they really add to the sound. I could measure that statement last week when my tubes stopped to work in the middle of a track I'm working on at the moment, and I was quite disappointed. Though I found some threads over the internets where some guys are sharing their impressions about adding better tubes into the box. I'm going to buy new ones and can't wait to hear how it sounds.

Anyway, for ambient I would better have recommend the EMX because it has more synths, but I never saw one and some people here seem to advice the ESX so my opinion is obviously not relevant.

i've used both but esx is the one for me.

the sampler is not useful as it should, it is just a "looper" though a warm one cause of the tubes,

but the tubes sucks so i prefer destroying the pcm drum and synths sounds

the tubes can be changed if you like in case you didn't know

never tried the SmartMedia but still the emx is a nice box for "hard" sounds to me

What do you mean by it being a looper? You can easily use it for one hits, waveform cycles, and loops.

that it has very poor features and calling it a "sampler" is quite an euphemism considering what most of the samplers do.

when i say looper i refer to the features that a looper has as a limited sampler, but still the EMX lacks some looper featuers...

so ok: it's just a very limited sampler but warm cause of the tubes
