Mike Paradinas' strength is that he can actually fucking play a piano, unlike most people who make electronic music it seems.
but that is also a boon to his style because the input medium can change the character of the tune, negatively... I like the music he makes that sounds like it was programmed into cubase by hand

True, and it can easily add to the cheese/wank factor of many tunes if he noodles too much on them - Much like how Squarepusher deteriorated into complete wank-shit with tracks like "andrei". It's really hard to get a good balance between wanting to program cool tracks and just wanting to actually play an instrument. Regardless, I think Paradinas is overall that much more capable of evoking emotion with his melodies because he clearly has a background in music theory and whatnot.

edit/edit: laughable butane bob, you posted while I was writing this, but I think we are more or less on the same page.

he has a very unique, recognizable sound, especially in his melodies and the way he uses distortion.

unlike most people who make any actual kind of computer music.
but the most important is that he got his own style, especially on melodies and he still have the balls to put some kind of feeling, even if negative,in his works.
his latest release is awesome.
he exposes himself.

that's the difference

For me personally I'd definitely rate him as one of the best. He creates incredibly lush tracks period. For example Kid Spatula, Jake Slazenger, Royal Astronomy, Lunatic Harness, In Pine Effect etc ... guys a fuckin' legend. Definitely not the weakest ... no ways. I'd easily rate him above Autechre & Cylob.

Does somebody know one of his tracks called "Sick Porter" ? Even now, its just freaking me out every time im listening to it.

His new album "Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique" sounds very depressive in general. But it love the track "Duntisbourne Abbots". It kinda reminds me of Zelda Ocarina of Time, dont know why...

I can tell you what ISN'T his strength - djing.

Saw him spinning vinyls a couple of months back and he was a tad shit, crap tune selection, crap mixing...

However Lunatic Harness is a fucking top record, as is tango n vectif and bluff limbo. Strength is definitely composition, beautiful melodies that actually stick in your mind.

Whenever i've seen him laptop dj he's been great (obviously - you'd have to be a right plum if you weren't), but i've seen him on the decks a couple of times and both times he's been quite shit.

The first was a jungle set, absolutely gash mixing but the tune selection was great...i don't know WHAT was going on in the second one. Rubbish tunes, probably managed about two proper transitions, ALL the others were trainwrecks where it he just ended up pushing the xfade over early instead of correcting it.
I don't really care about djing ability but he's been in the business long enough surely...

I've never caught Mike dj but oddly I just prefer the idea of hearing him live. I understand why he prolly does Dj though 'cause I expect doing the whole live thing is more of a fag. That said with Ableton he could prolly do an incredibly sick live set with fuck all hassle.
