OS X: Mavericks - Seriously, Apple?

Recommended Posts

The Apple WWDC Conference Keynote just ended, and while they showed some really cool stuff (new Mac Pro, iOS7), the new version of OS X is called... Mavericks.

W.T.F.

Seriously.

That's the best name they could come up with? It sounds like something Microsoft would name one of their products.

Well, they made some joke about it, of running out of cat names and had put up a picture of a Sea Lion which freaked me out even more before I realized it was a joke, and then they roll out... Mavericks.

I mean, seriously - they're going to name their future OSes after basketball teams? What's next, OS X: Spurs?

Even without the awkward Palin/Mel Gibson associations, Mavericks is a pretty weird name. In case it wasn't clear, it's named after a famously deadly big wave surfing location in Northern California. Almost took out Gerard Butler most recently. Maybe Apple hates Gerard Butler.

I actually don't think that's too terrible for a lock screen, quick function control menu. It's definitely jarring at first, but it looks like it might be at least halfway useable in practice. Quick app access on the bottom, frequently used control switches at the top, middle sectors for active controls. Could be more contrast between those logical sectors, though. I'm guessing you'll see that in a point release if it's a problem with real-world use.

It's nice to at least have that functionality... it's way overdue on iOS.

it's not a lock screen, from what I can see - it's a "quick settings" screen

and the readability is terrible. thin, white font on a pastel coloured background?!

lol

Right, and it is also available from the lock screen. The pastel colored background is a bokeh-ed out version of whatever your actual background would be, it looks like. Not really sure what it would look like in real world use; could be better or worse. One slightly positive thing about Apple is they do roll out legibility enhancements pretty quickly in point upgrades.

Having a quick settings screen at all is a positive development, even if it needs a bit of work.

I don't mind it - it's jarring, for sure - would have been nice if they had an "inverse" effect for white on charcoal or something...

Yeah, you swipe up or double-click for the Quick Settings - and the background is due to the wallpaper - it's just a frosted glass effect, so it will be interesting to see what this looks like against a dark background.

Yeah, actually it's not the lock screen. But not having to navigate a few pages into the settings just to adjust the brightness every time is most welcome.

I'm with you on the readability. Even on a Retina display I can't see it looking too clever.

I doubt I'll be rushing into this as I've been underwhelmed by the past two OSX iterations. I think I'm going to downgrade my mac to Snow Leopard. It just ran faster, smoother, actually for music production probably the best experience I've had. Fuck iMessage, I don't need every computer device in my house beeping when someone sends me a text.
