Planet Rephlex - Interview with Grant

Recommended Posts

Rephlex interviews are scarce, so this is worth a topic I reckon. Apparently Marco D'arcangelo will be writing a monthly article about the history and future of Rephlex Records. The first article is an interview with Marco and Grant. The English version is below the Italian written version:

http://www.improvearts.net/planet-rephlex/

Worth the read imo!

:(

Do you know that every time rumors of a new album of Richard? Do you know anything?Everything you hear and read, this is bullshit. Everything. Even when they say that his new album is coming out, if they are invented. He did not say it, you know? Continuously produces tracks, always. But you have to ask yourself why you should publish? Why? If you had done music. Do you play?

:(

why you should publish?

why you should publish?

why you should publish?

why you should publish?

tl;dr: Richard will never release another record.

Although it's sad, I could have peace with Aphex never releasing anything again, Grants arguments are pretty good, the name has too much anticipation connected to it that a new album can never live up to. Releasing anonymous is always still a very good option though, so let's hope for another Tuss (Steinvord). I agree with something Grant said to someone on this forum a while back; he has done enough. Let´s get the next generation going: EOD, Wisp, etc.

Note: he's stating that he doesn't speak for Richard, just what he is thinking about it. It remains a given that Steve Beckett told he had a contract with Aphex in 2009 for a few (3?) more records.

As far as this topic goes, maybe it can function as a main topic about the current shapeshifting and future plans of Rephlex. I'm curious as to what the next few articles will tell us the next few months, I'm more 'scared' for an end to Rephlex then Aphex never releasing anything anymore.

They didn't ask about one of the weirdest things - that Rephlex hasn't released any records this year, but "Rephlex" has released more music than ever before.

luke vibert mentioned in a interview around 2011 that aphex had "6 new tracks for the warp album", but he didn't show luke

one can only hope...

Great interview, I totally get where Grant is coming from when he states he doesn't want to be famous. Maybe that's why all theses new 'Rephlex' releases aren't officially on the label in hopes to shed less attention on the label and more to the actual artist's themselves. Or at least that's what I got out of it. *shrug*

I had all Leo’s records, I’ve got every records he’s done. I fucking worship him, he’s brilliant, he’s my favourite dj in the world. But maybe Qbert. Qbert and Leo Anibaldi are the boys for me but yeah, you know, he said I’ve got an album going and I was like, fuck! And I still think it’s one of our best albums. Fucking amazing! That was supposed to be the soundtrack to Blade. You know Wesley Snipes’ Blade? They wanted to use Leo’s album but he was too slack, I couldn’t get hold of him, I needed his permission and he was off in India or something and…

Funny shit, there is something cool about the first Blade movie, the feeling of realism of it all, despite overtly stylistic looks and flashy action montage.

I agree with this sentiment. Great interview, Grant's insight on where Rephlex is going and anything about his perspective on electronic music is a rare occurrence. Hell, years ago I could hardly find anything about him (I even started a thread asking if there were even pictures of him in existence!).

thanks for posting,

sometimes I wonder if the internet has killed any new music by Aphex Twin, its as though the spotlight can be drawn just that little bit closer, and its a bit too uncomfortable for him. Or perhaps he should just stop being so precious and man-up.

Word up for the Wisp Moses!

He makes tracks all the time. He’s always making tracks. But you have to ask yourself why would you release… Why? ... If you did, why would you release music?

To share, Grant. To share. And how about connecting with likeminded individuals (instead of calling them sheeple) and actually use that energy to create more work?

There's a lot of appreciation out there, apart from all the criticism. You know, those sheeple really do appreciate. Not releasing music because of some criticism is a bit silly when there's so much appreciation as well. It's just a poor excuse. Whatever though. I'm not to judge. But I can call bullshit, whenever I see it.

edit: thanks for posting the interview btw!

excuse me my slightly pissed response, but the implication of not releasing music because of expectations and criticism is totally skewed. the suggestion is that people who appreciate the music are the sheeple and therefore unimportant lower beings. The critical people however rule the world and make it so that no new record will be released. It's utter bollocks.

where in the interview does Grant say that there will never be any more new Aphex albums?

Also - didn't someone bump into Richard recently in a pub in London (one of the admins on WATMM?) and Richard told him that he does want to release some new material but he is working on it for a long time to make sure it is near perfection...? Does that ring any bells with anyone?

It is terrible to tease everyone with the live Manchester + Metz tracks and never getting the studio versions.

Mattia: no…

If you did, why would you release music? It’s either you want some money or you want some acclaim or acceptance from people, to go like “well done” or you want to progress in your field. It’s a bit like science you know, you want to push things forward. But then if you’ve done that… I mean, I’m not speaking for Richard, but in my opinion: why would, if you’ve got all those things already, why do another one? You don’t need to release it. Just make it and listen to it at home. You don’t need to release it and cos then everybody’s on the Internet criticising you or loving it but why do you care? You just want to chill out with your kids and you know. It’s not nice being in the spotlight you know. You just want to be a normal person and I guess, I don’t know. It’s my opinion.

The point Grant makes, is that if he puts himself in RDJ's shoes, hypothetically speaking, he sees no reason to release new music. So the question whether Grant actually knows a thing or two about RDJ's thoughts on this is out in the open. But if Grants ideas are indeed close to RDJ's you could draw some conclusions.

Regardless of who met who in some pub, btw.

Somone (probably admin on WATMM) met Gave Newell in a pub and he told him that they're doing Half Life 3.

It was messiaen who met RDJ at a party and he is kinda trust-worthy, because he's not that interested in his music.

lol that's the person

I know the whole 'pub' routine is unbelievable, or meeting at a 'party' for that matter, but the way he explained the brief encounter sounded authentic to me.

They've been friends for over 20 years, I somehow doubt Grant has to speculate to much as to what RDJ is thinking or doing.

This doesn't make sense to me. If there's music (if...) and people want it and you have a label, why not release it?
