No, it's not. Then again, electronic music isn't electronic also when it's not constructed by synthesis. Any music use electronic devices for some phase of production this day.

Making robots to play pop rock is a good social commentary.

a christmas card is totally electronic music, it's made by electronics!

are these quadrotors playing electronic music?

(answer: no, robots can play acoustic music poorly too.)

I was replying to the title question, who cares if christmas car is electronic music? Is there a fan base for it?

edit: won't edit my christmas car

Anyway to answer your question, i think it could be done both ways - if it's a mini-recorder with a lo-fi sample of a song, then it's not electronic, if it's 1-bit programmed mechanism, then i think it could be regarded as electronic music replica. I think there is a pure electronic music, when it's synthesized from scratch, and not pure, built using electronic devices including synths and samplers. Almost all music this age is electronic to some extent and there is no clear line for definition.

Therefore birds and monkeys in example above aren't playing purely electronic music either. Birds in general are better at music than robots, monkeys and humans

Hello - full disclosure, I'm the editor of a magazine called Hole & Corner - I thought you may be interested to know we have an exclusive interview with Willem-Godfried Raes of Logos Foundation in our new issue – he worked with Aphex Twin to produce the HAT (Hit Anything Robot), which he talks about in the piece - details about the issue are here, we will be putting excerpts up online once it officially hits the newsstand - we also have articles on sound theory, generative music pioneer Mick Grierson and Chris Watson of Cabaret Voltaire talking about field recordings

I know we have some robot thread somewhere, but even the google search function can't find the thread I'm looking for.

Anyways - this is a cool project, and really shows how far this field has come.
