Donnie Darko

Exorcist (borderline I suppose)

The Ring

Grudge

The Others

Paranormal Activity

Descent
Drag Me to Hell

The Devil's Backbone is supposed to be good

Also this episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? and few other episodes were actually kind of scary, that show wasn't as bad as I assumed it was in retrospect.

In terms of purely halloween movies and not horror, this is actually a really good list (Beetlejuice, ParaNorman, Witches, etc) though Earnest Scared Stupid isn't included. More silly nostalgic children's tv and movie classics:

Both ooze atmosphere. Might be a bit gory for some, but it's 'old' gore which is almost cartoon-ish in its delivery compared to some of the grim stuff that classifies for horror these days. Also, most of the time the acting is so overblown you'll find yourself laughing more than keeping your eyes closed.

I still get the sense that there's really no such thing as horror that I would really like. Eraserhead and Jacob's Ladder were probably the closest things to it. Jacob's Ladder was great because it was really just about the story and had random scenes that got creepy in a real bone-deep way. The final scene of Eraserhead with the horse baby thing screaming and shit was also good. I want to see a movie with the same aesthetic as Silent Hill 2. Something where there is constant surreal horror and the main character is so focused on finding his lost child or spouse that he barely reacts to it, and only gets emotional in character driven scenes.

quality recommendations. I will +1 Jacob's Ladder as well. 28 Days Later is probably my favourite 'zombie' flick although it's at breakneck speed, so while there is atmosphere it's not really a sedate, lingering, creeping affair like some other horror movies.

btw pelt me with stones all you like but I recall The Others being pretty decent.

the nameless

night of the hunter

or you could man up and watch martyrs, which has gore and horror in equal measure. avoid suspiria, it's an overrated pile of shit.
