yeah music = speech - text   at least roughly - i reckon it's a kind of super-developed version of the pitch and intonation parts of speech (the aural bit that doesn't contain textual info)

can't rem if there were any recordings i think not actually   guess you had to be there   cichlisuite was done in 97 (i think it was 97 anyway), after the tour we did with edgar   yeah we have

no it was the residual ram contents of an ensoniq eps, revealed by making the loop length too small on an unrelated sample (an ensoniq glitch we exploited a few times) those samples hadn't been loade

How did you guys do this marathon? How did you keep up with it? What tactics did you use? What are the highest number of tabs that you had open because of this?

Were you able to do other things while doing this? It certainly consumed my time to do other stuff, and I didn't even had to answer hundres of questions!

There was talk to ask you guys to take pictures of the place you did this marathon from. The reason for this eludes me. I don't think there ever was one. I assume it is meant for a greater good. You care about greater goods, right?

no more than 4 at once

the main prob is keeping up with ones that have been replied to, if there had been some little light on posts that had been quoted it would have been faster

yeah but nah, i'm in the studio atm and i'm not posting pics sorryyyy

:D that's the best bit

yeah, yeah

Cool dude! Surprise yer delivery driver with something great for me :)

What are your opinions on the use of fractal formulas for generating beats or melodies?

Any particular favorite types for particular applications? (i.e. L-Systems for melodies... Mandelbeats...etc)

Just bumping this one, in case it wasn't previously answered in the last 150ish pages.

Additionally: thank you guys so much for doing this. It absolutely blows my mind that you've put so much time and effort into this.

yeah (altho some people prob already know this) i'm a huge fan of simulating fluid dynamics to make things move around in a controllable but beautiful way (using navier-stokes equations)

For generating sounds? Can you also do turbulence?

sort of yeah

it's a lot easier since gen came out as well

Several questions all related:

1. When one of you have made a new bit of music - do you call it a "beat" a "track", etc.

ie. Do you say "Hey Rob/Sean, check this new beat I made"

I call them beats due to childhood hip-hop associations.

2. When you are amazed at what you just made but the other half of ae is not around, do you then go to your wife/girlfriend/lady/etc. and say

"Dear love, check this new beat I made"

3. Does said wife/girlfriend/lady/etc. then begrudgedly listen and say "That's nice"

4. According to your mood, do you then think "I'm half of fucking autechre - there are fuckers on the internet who'd be going crazy for this shit right now!"

1 both, beats for beats - tracks for tracks, but yeah i know what u mean, or we say, "so Sean, what'r u sayin'?" after a friend of ours - who is fully hiphop

… pretty much sums it up.

2 yeah, its not quite the same response tho'

3 no, something more amusingly patronising. =)

4 i try

Is this your last night answering questions? Everybody is saying their goodbyes! (I haven't read up on what has been said today :whistling:)

yeah shame, joyrex says no (from midnight CST)

Hey, you can always stay for longer, like outside the thread, y'know

Ok, so I'm a huge fan of the seemingly bootleg 'Rob Brown Ultra Rare Mix Tape' series, of which I have 13 different mp3s. We don't really know the true source of these mixes, and it's been said that there is no proof that they are even Rob Brown's. But I feel that the track selections have a lot of resemblances to the cuts we heard on 12 hour radio broadcast.

Legend has it (at least around here) is that these were taken from a Warp employees desk, were unmarked CD-Rs, and assumed to be created by Rob Brown...

I guess I'm just looking for the definitive answer... Are these your mixtapes I've been rocking, Rob? What's the story of their leak? If they're not you, do you know anything about them?

Sorry if this has been touched on already, still working my way through the thread....

What did you guys think of Lynch's Inland Empire?

it's my fave thing he's done

it's weird cos a lot of my mates slagged it cos of the film quality, but i reckon it appeals to me even more than film cos i like some old video art as well

the way it flows is amazing tho

it's sad that he said he won't do any more, but he's old and i like enough of his music for it not to be a huge deal. but man, he was getting so good there

He's certainly not retired yet. There was an article on him in NY Times this year mentioning he's working on a new script, which wasn't denied by Lynch

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/24/magazine/david-lynch-transcendental-meditation.html?partner=rss&emc=rss&smid=tw-nytmovies&pagewanted=all&_r=2&

The quote:

A few months later, I reached Lynch by phone at his hotel room in Paris. Bob Roth had told me that Lynch said he was working on a new script and that it was typically dark. When I asked Lynch about this, he paused, annoyed. “Bobby’s got a big mouth,” he said. I asked him if the script was influenced by his work with T.M., and he said no, absolutely not. This will be a David Lynch picture, he said, adding, “I think people would probably recognize it.”

what a beauty

to me Inland Empire is the most Autechrian film ever, if that makes any sense.

well that's a huge compliment

it def resonates with me in a weirdly deep way

i mean i was always a massive fan but that was like, times 10 for me

Have you read anything by Thomas Pynchon, Sean?

To me he is the most Autechrian author (I guess it's the other way round as he came first, but you know what I mean). Especially Gravity's Rainbow.

no never

i will now tho

in a similar vein someone once suggested james joyce, but i tried to read finnegan's wake once and was like, whatthefuckamireading.jpg

LOL! That's the standard response to Finnegan's Wake. Try Ulysses instead.

And definitely try Gravity's Rainbow. And maybe some of Jorge Luis Borges' stuff.

oh i read library of babel once, that was highly awesome

... one thing i've realised from reading this thread is that you guys are being mistaken as two cold technicians obsessed with virtuose modular prowess, when in fact you're just two sensitive guys obsessed with dreams.

i don't know but there's a dreamlike quality to Exai i seem to haven't noticed before. maybe it's those huge frozen reverb clouds in Bladelores or SPL9 (@3'20)... but it's like your work has taken a new dimension for me.

key stuff there

yeah shame, joyrex says no (from midnight CST)

Well, we can keep it going if you want! No, really - Sean and Rob have taken an enormous amount of their time to do this - let's let them get back to making great electronic music and hopefully the next AE release will be even more spectacular than Exai and L-Event!

Of course, they're both welcome to pop in whenever and participate in threads...

Aw well, it's been fun. Would be kinda sad if the triachus scenario would manifest itself

ae: "Hey, where is everyone? Does anyone have any questions? Anyone? Questions?"

watmm: "Sheesh are you still here?"

Both of you seem like proper mates. Going to delph deeper into your musical repertoire, since I've only listened to Incanbula.. and appreciated it dearly! Couldn't get into Amber for some reason. Got stuck at Slip, haha. I guess my mindstate just wasn't right for that moment.. or maybe the track did what it was supposed to..??

Anyway, tata, lots of blessings and good luck on your future projects!

i prefer moire effects in music more than fractal - in aesthetic ways anyway - tv transmissions recorded off tv with video etc… fences phasing each other on motorways so on, its a bit more wild but simpler too, and is more like things i find IRL on larger scales. i know theres loads of args to shut me up there, but mbe we o'd d on fractals as a generation.

really like L-systems for graf/ix, tho'

totally ok, thanks

I brought up this thought in the dedicAtEd thread for Untilted but I think it is an interesting enough idea generally speaking. Here's the alternate order I came up with for their 2005 offering, Fermium is not removed because I dislike the song but because it feels like the odd one out. This is just my first attempt at this and I don't think I have a better sequence than S and R (fucking love this album the way it is as it is), but it is fun to try rejigger things a bit and see if there are some nice ways of changing the sequencing, just for fun

      1. LCC
      2. The Trees
      3. Augmatic Disport
      4. Ipacial Section
      5. Iera
      6. Pro Radii
      7. Sublimit

Here's what auxien said about this new order/removing Fermium:

"hm, not sure about Fermium on its own, feels naked like that. but it is a little bit of an odd one out on the album perhaps, so i see the case there.
random thoughts listening to this tracklisting:
LCC as opener and Sublimit as closer is necessary, good work on not trying to fuck with that not sure about The Trees as track 2, feels a little too close in shape to LCC Ipacial into Iera is fucking great Iera into Pro Radii works pretty well Pro Radii into Sublimit works pretty well too  overall not as offensive as i'd expected trying to tweak what's pretty close to a perfect album. may see about doing an alternate tracklist of my own"
