I wouldn't normally post a Pop Ambient release, but track nine has piqued my interest. I've always thought Axel and Wolfgang could make great tunes together.

Thomas Fehlmann, The Field and Wolfgang Voigt will all feature in the next edition of Kompakt's Pop Ambient series.

The CD series has been an annual staple of the Cologne label's output for the past 12 years. Pop Ambient 2014 features a few regulars to the series—Fehlmann, The Field and Wolfgang Voigt—while Ulf Lohmann returns after a six-year absence to provide the compilation's opening and closing track. There's a "Triola" mix of The Bionaut's 1992 favourite "Aquamarine" and a track from Cologne Tape, a live project featuring Ada and The Field among others. Earlier this year we went deep on the history of Kompakt to celebrate its 20th anniversary—check it out here if you missed it first time round.

Kompakt will release Pop Ambient 2014 on January 27th, 2014.

Cool, will have to check out by virtue of voigt and fehlmann. Here's as good as any place to ask, so of these seemingly infinite series of Pop Ambient and Total compilations that Kompakt have released over the years, are there any that stand out in particular or are acknowledged as being the better/best of the lot?

I like the Pop Ambient one with the two Bvdub tracks on it. But I’m a sucker for Bvdub. 2010 it might be?

2007 and 2008 I've found to be the best overall. Great tracks from Popnoname, Klimek, Gas/All, and Triola in particular.

And yeah I've missed Ulf's brand of gauzy ambience.

Why wouldn't you normally post a Pop Ambient release? Usually great compilations. I have the last 3 and will get this. I hope to get the previous ones at some point, too.

Only because we all know it's coming and they generally are out at about the same time every year. I didn't mean to denigrate the music at all, I generally like this series a lot.

Fair enough man.

You're right. They are consistent!

I read that they used to release them in December. Shame they don't still as I could imagine listening to them around Christmas.
