It seems a strange thing to say about someone famous for offbeat and challenging work. Yet Thomson has a point. I hadn't thought about Hoffman like that. I mean, it's a given that he was a great actor. We all respected and loved him in a strange way. He had such passion and talent on screen. It was infectious and unforgettable to watch him. But couldn't he have done more? He didn't need to do any more than he wanted but I don't think we saw the very best of him. I think Capote was his best but he had the ability to be better. But I was always waiting for his next stellar role. I thought The Master might have been it. But I still felt that he could have done more, as great as it was. I wanted to see his next role. I think it's because any time I see him in a role I feel like I'm watching someone I know, which made his death weirdly personal. He's a symbol of humanity for me I guess.
