What does WATMM think about Nine Inch Nails (Ghosts I-IV)?

I think he's held in pretty high regard in here, personally I can't stand the guy and his music.

Guest Gravity

It was the type of thing I've always wanted to hear from him, one of my favorite NIN albums. His and Atticus' soundtracks are great too.

They're doing Fincher's next film now, too... Gone Girl.

I found it to be the only thing he did after The Fragile that was any good.

Most of it takes too long to go anywhere, and it often sounds like the background music to a slow paced video game

But still, I like it. Maybe because I hated With Teeth and beyond so much that in comparison it is good.

The music is ok. definitely better than WITHA_TEETHA and all the other stuff.

The deluxe box set has amazing quality, it's the best box set I've seen. completely kicks the shit out of the Warp20 box set for quality.

I nearly shit myself when I heard this was coming out. Once I got it though, it felt like too much. Some tracks felt like they went nowhere. Could have been condensed to one disc. but I still really enjoyed it. I always fantasized about having a fully instrumental NIN album and then got it. haven't listened to it in a few years though.

nin soundscapes are generally best in small doses, or buried behind a bunch of other stuff. The kind of thing you get a brief taste of at the tail end of a nin pop track, that'll make you go "hey trent go back to that! that sounded cool!", but it's left to the imagination.

when you get a full album's worth of the misty bits it loses that dynamic

I like With Teeth, in retrospect. I wasn't a big fan of it when it first came out, but when you forget that it came after an amazing concept album it's pretty alright. I have the opposite opinion of Year Zero; I loved it when it first came out but haven't had the desire to listen to it in years.

I love the new one though. Some really great tracks!

fake edit: oh yeah, The Slip had some nice songs on it as well.

anything after ghosts i dont think i need in my life.

HTDA is pretty dire (except for the first EP's art), most of the post-ghosts albums I haven't listened to enough to form an opinion on, but at least some of the track versions from the recent tour recording are essential nin imo

I've bought every NIN release since downward spiral (and most before), but none of the recent stuff has any staying power for me. I listen to it and I'm like "oh that's cool" and then I never feel a need to listen again. Ghosts was the same way. I like the tracks that Brian from the Dresden Dolls was on. Never listen to 'em.

Yeah I think it would have been better as a 'live in the studio' DVD.. kinda like the bits of video footage of rehearsals from the Still album/Fragile tour.
