Breaking down / Cleaning up the [most possibly] Autechre Max patch

compared to textual programming it's infuriating.

i mean, obviously some things are okay, and it's quick to set up stuff which otherwise requires a lot of boilerplate code, but the whole mousey-clicky-patchy thing is insane. basically boils down to this:

logic often makes more sense if you get rid of a graphical spatial representation.

consider the following simple logic:

i ask you for your name, and you tell me your name in response. in about every programming language, this is a really simple thing to just type in.

in max, everything goes into the top, and poops out the bottom. it's like, i ask for your name, and you don't respond directly, but make a silent fart.

I then have to actively detect whether you farted and if that fart contains the information i am looking for. lush!

I think it probably is a result of the historic buffer size manipulation and dealing with blocks of data. The cycle accurate stuff with Gen~ reduces the poop-banging problem allowing it to me more 'traditional programming'-y

wow well done ...this is the most creative explanation of max shitieness and i agree with you

but my brain works like 97% right side, 0.1% left (see?) so the thing that i like about max (oppose to coding) is that it gives me an instant visual feedback (right brain) and it gives me an opportunity to think less linear (which is a left brain specialty) patching everything with everything, without thinking logical (or less logical) but more on spontaneous level, intuitive... (thing that the guy from the upper youtube video didn't understand while cleaning the Ae patch)

i'm trying to learn SC but it's so much harder to me, much harder, but thank god i'm pertinacious as hell

Woah, this is the first time I've heard so much hostility towards it - I'm not far enough into it yet to have come across this stuff. Only really getting as far as likkle M4L effects units.

max is the art that takes and takes and never gives. tbh the time you lose adapting yourself to its fucked up ass backwards ways is equal to the time you gain in not having to code the boiler plate shit from scratch.

lol this guy 'cleaned up' my friend Powmod's mod on the Autechre patch. The original patch didn't have a lot of the stuff here including the preset/snapshot box. Glad that there aren't any Cycling 74 employees trying to do damage control aka false propaganda to claim that they allowed an exclusive confield Autechre era patch to leak out of a workshop they did. :)
It's interesting that the last few times I saw this posted on the internet it seems like the same handful of people come in to announce that it's a 'hoax'. Nope, it's real

edit: just watched the video, patchname is still 'autechre powmod' haha, I wonder if this guy would be interested in the original un-modded patch

ill have to check, the unmodded patch was actually not as good as what Powmod did. The only reason i was suggesting to share it was for historical purposes, so you can see exactly what Autechre had built themselves Vs what my friend added. He simply added tempo controls, some sort of mixer ( i think) for the different layers and presets

Max's real strength is that it's accessible to non-programmers. It's not meant to be an environment that programmers would feel comfortable in, it's for artists. I totally understand the arguments put forth here though ha.
