JR, if there's a substantial response from the Kickstarter, maybe it would be sensible to engage a professional to do the transfer. There are specialists who do this, and the price isn't as high as you'd imagine.

Just as an example, this chap here does full service transfer including machine wet cleaning (you do know this LP is going to be in a pretty grim state if it's been unplayed for 20 years..) and transcription using EMT turntables (which are pretty much the best in the world). He's in Romford, just outside London, and can even collect valuable recordings personally. The charge for transfer is £10 per LP side

Just a thought..

Sounds like a good alternative!

Thank you - that's an excellent idea (and I am sure the guy who I asked to do this would agree). I will look into this further.

yeah it does seem like a good idea!

he'd better not do any messing about with the files though....there's lots of mention of declicking, dehiss and denoise

I'll second that.

I've just noticed though - it seems like he only does transfer to CD, so sound quality won't be good enough

WATMM

edit:

derp....FAQ states he can convert to multiple formats

A CD would be good enough anyway... ;) 16-bit/44.1kHz is mathematically sufficient for audible signals, but that's an entirely different conversation.

I think the proper cleaning and ripping from that John Shaw fellow would be ideal. I'd even be okay with him going through his usual de-clicking process, as long as there existed an untouched lossless rip along with the post-processed files. Looks like his services are about as top-notch as we could reasonably hope for.

Very interesting. Also, backed :cerious:

Not that I'm particularly interested in an audio-debate, but I'm fully in agreement with the above - higher than 44.1/16 is really not necessary. Far more important is a well-engineered source and well-engineered convertors.

(EDIT) ..though I guess there'll be plenty of people who'll want to tinker around with and remaster these rips, so by all means, hi-def all the way ;-)
