Good article.

Asking these sorts of questions, while philosophically entertaining, is a poor substitute for wrestling with the real moral quandaries associated with unbridled technological development in the name of corporate capitalism. Digital platforms have turned an already exploitative and extractive marketplace (think Walmart) into an even more dehumanizing successor (think Amazon). Most of us became aware of these downsides in the form of automated jobs, the gig economy, and the demise of local retail.

worms frozen in permafrost for 42,000 years come back to life and are hungry.

Roundworms found in the permafrost in two areas of Siberia have come back to life in Petri dishes. These worms had been frozen in the permafrost for tens of thousands of years, since the Pleistocene age. Scientists working on the research say that 300 prehistoric worms were analyzed and that these two were shown to contain viable nematodes.

The nematodes showed signs of life after being defrosted. Scientists say the worms started moving and then eating again. One of the worms was discovered in an ancient squirrel burrow in the wall of the Duvanny Yar outcrop in the lower reaches of the Kolyma River. That worm is 32,000 years old.

The other worm was found in the permafrost near Alazeya River in 2015 and is about 41,700 years old. These two nematodes are the oldest living animals on the planet and both are believed to be female. The worms came back to life in a lab at The Institute of Physico-Chemical and Biological Problems of Soil Science.

My god do I hate people so much sometimes. Of all the fucking ridiculous wastes of time and energy and money and productivity...chicken diapers. Is this the future? ffs man.

Didn't know ticks could essentially swarm an animal (I've heard of some getting ticks so bad over time that they get diseases in their weakened state, not actually just get the blood sucked from them 'til they just die from that), nor that they could reproduce asexually. https://arstechnica.com/science/2018/08/us-invaded-by-savage-tick-that-sucks-animals-dry-spawns-without-mating/

https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/news/2018/09/18/sunspot-observatory-closure-ends-but-mystery-conspiracy-theories-remain/1336250002/

The mystery surrounding the sudden evacuation and closure of the Sunspot Observatory two weeks ago has generated national attention, but few answers.

The National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico, reopened Monday. But they have yet to provide full details on what caused the observatory to be closed and what required such a large law enforcement response.

My grandfather told me about this last week, was v concerned it was some super shady government conspiracy action happening, maybe even aliens was the suggestions blowing up on the places online you might expect. Sure it'll turn into an even bigger conspiracy theory story long term.

“This is probably one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen in this department since I’ve been appointed police chief,” James Craig told reporters. “In fact, I’d have to tell you it is probably one of the most disappointing things I’ve experienced in my entire 40-year career.”

During the botched operation, 12th precinct officers, who were posing as drug dealers, were held at gunpoint by police from the 11th precinct. “I am thankful that no one was more seriously injured,” Craig said.

Key fobs that suddenly won't unlock vehicles. Cars that won't start. Alarms that go off for no reason and can't be quieted. Something mysterious is thwarting drivers outside a grocery store in the small Alberta town of Carstairs — and it's sparking all kinds of theories.
