do the boys unanimously think it's cheesy? Or is it mainly Sean. Cause I could picture Rob basking in some Amber while doin the dishes.

It was akshly Robert John who dropped the cheesy line towards it, reflexive of his old pads, I presume

ah yes, NTS, the lighter crap, compared to amber..

I think he says 'later' rather than 'lighter', said with a nice southern drawl

If I had a scrobbler that I'd been using across all the formats I've listened to this record on, I would not be surprised to learn that "Slip" is BY FAR my most played Autechre track and one of my most played tracks of all time.  And this is coming from someone who thinks that "pendulu hv moda" is peak Autechre.

I feel like the boys are hard on Amber sometimes like it was a surrender to commercialism or inauthentic or something. I really would love to see what Autechre would do if they were forced to be as concrete as Amber again. I think that's part of what made the Sophie remix kind of thrilling. It's not that it's their best remix or anything, but it IS Autechre playing by the conventions of genre and that is relatively rare these days imo.

And that's why their output pretty much post LP5 is something that I can't really drop into my playlists or anything because I honestly have to be in the mood for Autechre and me and my wife/kids/guests have to be too. It's music that's just too situational. I know they have 'tame' tracks that would blow our wigs off on their hard drives that probably won't see the light of the day because it breaks up the continuity of their output too violently maybe.

All I'm saying is that if Autechre get on Soundcloud and start up an RDJ dump of old tracks, I will probably be more excited about that than a new album announcement from BOC.

Edit: As I recall from the AMA, Sean or Rob actually talked about trying to make genre tracks but getting bored and not knowing how anybody finishes those things ?

If a friend made it, I think I would like it and think it was really cool that they had made it, but because it's Autechre, you can't help comparing it to what they did later

the autechre brothers are visiting the sand dunes (or whatever) from the cover of amber after all these years. they scramble up the ("silver") side, sliding and "slip"ping as they get "further" to the top. reaching the peak they look across the landscape. sean from autechre says "check this out" and he does the autechre signature (TM) snow kick. rob laughs, says "lmao" and then they both try to kick the sand together to create the classic image. suddenly the mood changes. melancholic. amber was released 60 years ago! looking across the landscape now feels both like looking back over the expanse of their lives gone by and looking into the ultimate horizon. death. at this moment perhaps a tear is shed by both men, a teartear.

rob suddenly bends down, pulls out a decrepit minidisc player from the sand. sean looks intently with eyebrows raised, not quite believing the sight in front of him. rob (robert?) dusts off the minidisc machine. they both scrutinize it. it's unmistakable. "PRORPERTY OF BOOTH/BROWN" is scratched into the metallic surface. rob pulls out a pair of headphones and plugs them in. the brothers huddle together pressing the "cans" to their ears and press PLAY. they are shocked. this is the original Amber minidisc, lost all these years only to be found at this special site. one of the Designers Republic lads must have dropped it here when they were snapping the photo for the cover. mental.

they listen to the entire album, standing together as though frozen to the spot. rob takes the headphones and puts them back in his pocket (northface jaccket). sean chucks the minidisc player into the sand. "this one's kinda cheesy," rob says solemnly, looking once more into the distance. sean says nothing, staring straight ahead while smoking (or whatever it's called) from his "vape pen." the brothers quickly descend the sandy slope, leaving the minidisc behind. the sun sets as they hop onto their electric scooters and zip off into the darkness.
