Did anyone notice Taking Control sounds different?

Off the upbeat, non-piano tracks on the album, this track sounds different. It's like it was made on a different gear, the production just sounds different, if you compare it to the rest. It's hard to put it in words but I do notice it. I always thought this track doesn't really fit on there, even if it's a great track.

I'm talking control of

the drum machine

yeah dude it sounds like it was produced on that one studio dark side of the moon was made because the analog frequencies were just a tad on the holy cow this is perfect area.

I thought the voice was supposed to be stephen hawking's...

And that's what it would sound like if stephen hawking took control of your drum machine.. =/

I was just thinking about this track earlier.

I always think of it as a track to show off all his sampling & programming expertise. Especially at the 5min mark where it goes bananas with the Led Zeppelin break and Caustic Window style kicks.

Anyone know what is said in the sample at 4:40 before it goes absolutely nuts with break spam?

Also hardest/best breakdowns in a musicians career general.

to me this is probably the closest Aphex has ever gotten to sounding like 16-bit chiptune music. It kind of reminds me of Team Doyobi's sound pallette, very evocative of late 80s Capcom game music

I think it does sound a tiny bit... I dunno, 'chunkier' than the rest of the album? There's something about it that makes it stand out a bit. Great track though. I think it fits.

  • 5 years later...

this just in:

i just noticed the girl (supposedly rich's ex-gf) says 'tu prends le contrôle de la boîte à rythmes' at 6:05, which is french for 'you take/you're taking control of the drum machine'.

this probably got figured out long ago already but it's new to me

  • Taking Control contains the line "Tu prends (le) contrôle de ma(/la) boîte à rythme" (first at 3:32, then 5:59 and forth) : "you're taking control of the(/my) drum machine" (more litterally, "rythm box").

  • And I've never seen this mentioned elsewhere, but in Meltphace 6 it goes : "Tomber" ("to fall"), (3:54, just after the "just relax" bit) and it's a nice moment because with the augmenting delay it really does sounds as if the music itself is falling down.

What a track. It sure does what it says on the can.

@aencre i see i'm way late on this, well done.

about hearing 'tomber' in meltphace 6: i don't hear 'tomber' at all, the vowel of the first syllable sounds nothing like the french pronounce it (she pronounces it like 'temps' whereas we pronounce it 'ton'), is this how the québécois pronounce it?

I remember hearing this track for the first time and noting how narrow the stereo field is on most of it, especially compared to the rest of the album.  Kind of bugged me at the time, thinking if the sounds were a little "bigger" it would be that much better.  But I suspect these are things I'd consider part of the charm now, and strengths rather than problems. Forces you to focus a bit more to absorb what's going on in the beats.  ... I think this means it's time for another Drukqs album listening.  Been too long.
