An international group of astronomers has used the ESO 3.6-metre telescope to identify a planet just like Jupiter orbiting at the same distance from a Sun-like star, HIP 11915. According to current theories, the formation of Jupiter-mass planets plays an important role in shaping the architecture of planetary systems. The existence of a Jupiter-mass planet in a Jupiter-like orbit around a Sun-like star opens the possibility that the system of planets around this star may be similar to our own Solar System. HIP 11915 is about the same age as the Sun and, furthermore, its Sun-like composition suggests that there may also be rocky planets orbiting closer to the star.

NASA is teasing space enthusiasts, hinting that it may have some big news to announce about other Earth-like planets in the Milky Way. The space agency said it plans to share a new discovery from its Kepler Space Telescope at a news conference scheduled for 9 a.m. PDT on Thursday. The Kepler mission, launched in 2009, is dedicated to finding Earth-like planets in what scientists call the "habitable zone," or the region near stars where orbiting planets might have the conditions to support the existence of liquid water.

about kepler 452-b:

  • it's the smallest exoplanet discovered to date discovered orbiting in the habitable zone of a g2-class star, just like the earth and the sun.
  • kepler-452b is 60 percent larger in diameter than earth and is considered a super-earth-size planet.
  • It's likely rocky.
  • while kepler-452b is larger than earth, its 385-day orbit is only 5 percent longer.
  • the planet is 5 percent farther from its parent star kepler-452 than earth is from the sun.
  • kepler-452 is 6 billion years old, 1.5 billion years older than our sun, has the same temperature, and is 20 percent brighter and has a diameter 10 percent larger.
  • the kepler-452 system is located 1,400 light-years away in the constellation cygnus
  • kepler-452b is more likely more idm than earth

after months of editing the colours of the landscape and adjusting the sky brightness, also the reflections don't match up, it must be added.Still though it was worth the effort i think.

lol, definitely. Had to look it up on the NASA website to see if it was authentic. Same with the green outline on this photo, which I assume serves some purpose

the small shadow is presumably because the sun is directly behind the probe. but yeah, it does make it look fake (looks like a photoshop drop-shadow effect). ha. the green could be from the moon's atmosphere (it has a very small one)?

      This is a companion thread to the Space Thread I started a while ago, and I've been thinking about it for a while. Time is one of the great mysteries of the universe, physics gives us a basic understanding of it, but in human terms, time is a major fundamental of our lifetimes. We measure our lives in terms of time periods, we (at least in the Gregorian calendar) measure years in terms of one man's life, Jesus. Muslims for example, measure time on a lunar calendar, and have a completely different timetable. It is fascinating to me what our understanding of time might become in the future, as we begin to understand our surrounding universe more, and the rules of quantum physics, spacetime, singularities, frame dragging, relativity, etc. I know some of you are much more science oriented than me, so let's start a discussion here.
