Shouldn't Kode9 be posting something cryptic about a new Burial EP before year's end? I sure hope so; these Xmas EPs are such a treat.

Rival Dealer came out a year ago next week, where the hell did 2014 go!

It's gonna be a double album. Burial goes prog with epic woodblock solos and a concept involving dragons and sorcery... on tha streetz.

Actually a relevant concept since he's a big Dark Souls fan! (dunno if the reference was already intended or not, sorry)

Rival Dealer was the best EP of 2013. Deal with it.

He already dusted off an unreleased track from the archives for that Hyperdub comp, surely that's enough for this year?

Seriously though, I'm a little less excited after Rival Dealer. If he does release something I hope it doesn't follow that style. I really liked where he was going with Truant/Rough Sleeper.

The same song lasts for over 5 minutes, Burial doesn't have that kind of attention span - he would've fit at least 7 tracks in that space.

Rival Dealer was Lulu-tier cringetastic. It still smarts a bit.

The first track of Rival Dealer is still really good, but when it gets into that cheesy-ass 80s shit is where he lost me.

Been giving Kindred Ep a few spins of late. Those tracks are unbeatable.

and Kindred is served with zero cheese, after that EP he seems to tip-toed into a bit of dodgy territory (imo)

I found it fascinating, I think he specifically was channeling cheesy, awkward and overall uncomfortable sample sources and music references. Like the concept was "terrible music you liked as a moody teenager that was emotionally stirring then but now painful nostalgia you want to forget about." It's something less appealing than his usual vague and universal melancholy vibe. That's my pet theory anyway.

If anything he left a comfort zone.
