DSLR for Video

I bought a 550D around 4 years ago and it still holds up pretty well. The only downside when compared to today's tech, is that you can't shoot 60fps footage in anything higher than 720p, but I guess you can't really complain about that with the camera being as old as it is. It doesn't have a flip-out LCD screen either, but Canon corrected that with the 600D.

Your best bet is to go with the 600D, seeing as you want something cheap/decent. The video capabilities are pretty much identical to what the 550D offers, but you get the added bonus of that flip-out screen.

I've got a 7D which is better now the firmware's been updated to disable automatic gain on the audio. It does 50fps slomo at 720p which is very nice.

If I could choose again though I'd go for the 70D with the flip out touch screen monitor - as it's much easier to view what you're shooting at different angles and adjusting settings/exposure etc, especially when it's on a rig.

Any of the Canons, then whack this firmware on it to add loads of video related features - http://www.magiclantern.fm/

^ What he said. Magic Lantern is essential if you've got a Canon DSLR, even if it's just for the audio features alone. It allows you to use an external input (I've got the Rode Stereo VideoMic which works like a charm), manually adjust the gain, monitor the audio with headphones, etc.

I just bought(3 days ago) a second hand EOS M, for ~300eur, with EF-M 22mm f/2.0 and EF-M 18-55mm IS and, wait for it, EF adapter! The thing runs magic lantern, which means 720p raw video.

Magic lantern is awesome because it also unlocks cropped video mode, I think it's around 3x zoom, but the best thing about it is that it eliminates the line skipping and thus moire. Also, judder from rolling shutter is practically eliminated, except for extremely fast pans.

I'm really happy with it so far, it's a steal!

Also, if you can find a 50D in good shape and some canon glass, go for it. It's a mean raw video machine because of the CF card speeds.
