not bad last episode-

i figured i had to watch this episode with google for names. quick question though: who were the guys following velcoro? and they put a tracker under his car. why exactly could he not dump it? because they were following him? he made it sound like it would've been impossible to lose them. also, who were the guys who killed vince vaughn? were those the mexicans? if he gave that dude his suit, he would have lived right? why exactly did he not give the guy his suit?

and the black cop was killed coz he was corrupt? who was the guy spying on him while he was talking to velcoro?

last but not least. who was the guy in venezuela who wasn't supposed to leave the room until rachel mcadams left? and who was the baby? was that frank's?

fuck that was sobering... real noir for the 21st century. give it a couple months to sink in. everyone got the world they deserved. watchmen-esque ending was perfect, also.

i teared up, but in honor of Ray, held it back.

Nic Pizzolatto's on the record somewhere saying that this season's cast of characters was bound to their natures, for better or worse.

Frank's pride got him killed.

Ray's love for his son got him killed.

Paul died running because he'd always been running.

Frank dying on dry land he obsessed over his entire life (not the actual real estate, but you get the idea)

Ray running in the forest where the sun barely pokes through the dark. His whole life he wanted redemption, he saw the light and knew he had finally done something right for someone he loved

Ani getting a new beginning at sea. The boat was used by all three characters as the only location that was "safe." Her whole life she never felt safe, never trusted and even hated men, and then realized that one had just died for her so she could live.

Fantastic juxtaposition

man, that was some heavy shit. a couple of unexpected turns, as expected. wrapped it up nicely while making you reflect. I loved the firefights, especially assaulting the cabin. it reminded me a lot of Heat.

the baby was Ray's, but who was the grey haired guy walking away from the high speed rail inauguration?

A really good last episode. Dark as fuck.

The guys following Velcoro were a swat team with Burris in the lead. Burris was also the guy spying on Holloway (the black cop) and Velcoro at the airport. As for the tracker, Velcoro was a wanted man - there was state-wide man hunt for him. He could have jimmied it off, but he knew that if they found him at the school, they could have found him anywhere - and that would have led them to Bezzerides, who still had all the evidence. Plus it was a way to kill time so that Bezzerides had a better chance to get out.

In Venezuela, Bezzerides was talking to the reporter that Velcoro beat up way back in episode 1. I imagine the baby is Ray's, but no way to be sure.

Frank was killed by the Mexicans because they were pissed over the loss of the club and casino. If he had given them his suit, he would have died naked. I was hoping Frank would make it, even though I knew he wouldn't. His ending scene was pretty harsh with his wife in his vision.

concerning frank, weren't the mexicans going to leave him after he gave them the $4million? he then says "$4 million doesn't buy me a ride back to town?" and that's when one of the mexican gangsters supposedly says he wants his suit. so would they have killed him even if he never asked for a ride? also, when the one guy stabs him, the guy in charge says something (in spanish) which i assumed was "enough". so his killing seemed more like an impromptu attack rather than something that was planned. am i correct with this assumption?

also, is burris a cop? when he was spying on holloway was he expecting velcoro to be there, because holloway wasn't.

also i agree about frank's death being sad but i kinda felt he deserved it. he was arrogant and played ruthless so it was fitting. velcoro's was really sad though. even his text didn't go through. then the ex gets the results of that perternity test

It was a million that Frank gave the Mexicans. Also remember, the diamonds were in Frank's suit. I assume they were going to kill him anyways, cause they dug a hole for him.

Yes Burris is a cop. He was one of the ones involved in the jewel heist back in the day. I don't think he was expecting Velcoro to be there.

IN MY OPINION ALERT!!!:

i tried really hard to enjoy this season, but the finale just made it all come into perspective. while the other episodes were at least kinda funny, this one just came off as a rushed, cobbled-together mess. i think he should have either made the characters gta-like parodies of california plastic types or grounded them more in reality. in the end, most of them just ended up unsympathetic and one dimensional with very little believable behavior. the crime parts were confusing and the entire casper/jeweller mess just felt like a farce by the end. first season was by no means the amazing masterpiece some people thought it was, but it was very solid and entertaining television. while that season showed some signs of thinking too highly of itself, this one seems to have no sort of self awareness at all. the ending scenes for each characters travelled well beyond cheeseville.

at this point i hope mr pizzolatto goes ham with some proper mystery/horror shit for s3, there are too many bland gruff cop shows already.

If the first season ended on a slightly more positive note, this one ended on a more negative note. The powers that be ended up getting their rail system and shady corrupt politicians got their kickbacks and the game continues to be played. One ungerground player gets ousted only to be replaced by another. I guess the idea was to convey the hopelessness of fighting against an established order. The protagonists ended up either dead or on the run. The Elroy influence was pretty blatant in this season. Not as strong as the first one, but quality TV nonetheless, but it's not a high bar. I wonder if there will be a third season, since most have been slamming this season, which I don't really get. I guess people expected more of the same.

okay i didn't know (or remember) that there were jewels in frank's suit. so when he refused to give that guy his suit just thought "you're probably biting off a little more than you can chew". his character came off that way the entire season, so his death wasn't so sad, more like "see. that's what you get"

btw: his reaction when he was tossing his ring, then his wife tosses her's was kinda hilarious. she says "oh you think i care about the ring" and his face goes "huh?". the combination of his character's lack of being a full postal gangster and vince vaughn being a comedy actor made that scene (and his character) clumsy. i never bought his character. he was almost like a guy acting like a guy that should be tough

the plot about a jewelry heist never clicked with me (maybe i'm just stupid or didn't care enough to fully pay attention). i thought this was about who killed caspere- but that slowly seemed not to be the case, and then there was something about land deals then corruption.

thanks for explaining everything for me though. i really appreciate. a salute for velcoro: a true vinci mumbling cop if there ever was one

I like that Velcoro died in a redwood forest (bohemian grove). There seem to be traces of history in the show and all around I like the personal drama etc. I'm guessing there's a lot of symbolism in the show but I didn't look all of it up. It did to me have a feeling of very cliche noir / cop drama for a while but with traces of a more modern and nuanced setting and writing

The baby was Velcoro's because McAdams' character said that his sons (plural) needed to know the truth.

Frank walking in the desert seeing mirages was really cool.

I'm fuzzy on when they stared following Frank and Ray. All the way from the train station shootout? Those two cars were the untraceable ones Frank requested from his ethnic friends. Unless those two double crossed him, and they did look at each other suspiciously a few times, that's a plot hole. Also, wasn't Ray's fuel line cut when he came back to the car? That looked like gasoline all over the ground, then how did he get way out in the woods without running out of gas? Or are the Redwoods that close to LA suburbs?
Did Holloway die with the blue diamonds in his possession? I'm glad he was killed by other cops, he deserved it. The kid stabbing him furiously was a fuck yeah moment.

Oh yeah, Vince Vaughn is fucking 6'5", (along with Christopher Lee and Vincent Price, one of the tallest leading men in history) how would that suit not look ridiculous on that thug? I wasn't thinking Frank was still trying to hold onto his diamonds but that makes sense.

Velcoro's Charger was still the same one he was always driving. I think his Audi and his henchman's were the two untraceable ones - hence no tail on Frank.

Ray's fuel line wasn't cut - there was water on the ground (must have been filmed before the drought ;))

the part where his wife says "you can rest now" and he goes "never babe. gotta keep moving". and she's like "oh babe. you stopped moving back there"

that was really good- especially since it was intercutting with velcoro's destiny

a little bit too derivative of a Breaking Bad style wrap up but I felt this season had a much stronger ending than Season 1. Still weird they didn't connect too much of the story to Season 1. What was on those tapes Casper had?

I thought they were always intended to be self-contained anthologies with no connection.

Best ending to a show since Deadwood.

Also, there were a ton of Michael Mann "homages" in this series.

Especially references to "Thief" and "Heat", as well as a little bit of "Miami Vice".

I vaguely remember trying to watch Stalker after drinking a bottle of gin and I can only assume Nebraska does a similar thing watching this show.

It took awhile to get going but on the whole I enjoyed the series, even Vaughn pulled it out the bag which I wasn't expecting, but unlike the first series I can't imagine I'll watch it again.

the reveal of who the 'bird man' was I thought very disappointing and cheeseball, but I liked the overall feel of the last episode.

Especially dug the blackwater team going in for the kill at the end among the redwoods.

the videos on Casper's harddrive were encrypted?
