^ holy shit, my thoughts exactly. I remember early when tiktok was catching on everyone was like "oh but it's super sketchy, it's wide open for the Chinese government to spy on you" or whatever, and then they went on to totally consent to it anyway. And it's just the most brain-rotting, attention-span-killing, narcissist-nurturing garbage pastime imaginable. Instagram was already bad enough. Here I thought I was wasting my life.

I stoped with Facebook a month ago.. Feel so good now! So tired of being bored and have to swipe friends family photos on Facebook and IG zzzzzzz....

Youtube is the only thing I really enjoy and it is nice to have some music mixes going.

5 years + (I think) facebook free.  Not missed it one bit.

I use instagram for my musical content and have a private family account that I barely update but it keeps my relatives happy to see what I am up to.  But I am off instagram for August anyway as a bit of a socials detox.  The "reels" thing really annoys me, I wish I could disable it.  The adverts are getting worse too.  it is only a matter of time before I close my account completely.

TikTok looks like the worst.

Tik Tok sucks, but this video is asinine and sinophobic.

Yeah the video is extremely lame, as is to be expected from wsj coverage. It’s kind of fascinating how there’s this weird fear mongering about the algorithm, like that French guy talking about how TikTok is “even worse” than youtube bc so much of what you see is recommended content. that perspective is out of touch. I’m imagining trying to explain to some smug wsj guy what a ?️ussy is.

i don’t use any social media whatsoever but I do occasionally watch les tiktok while I’m eating cereal or something. it’s absolutely cringe stuff but it’s amusing watching people goof off and occasionally be p funny. I’d say it’s a lot less cringe than the funny pictures thread imo tbqh

Yeah, poor video. Reminiscent of the insightful 'analysis' in Netflix's The Social Dilemma.

It's basically "Tik Tok does the same awful stuff every other social media company does, but this one is from CHIII-NAAAH so here's some spooky music"

Haven't used any social media (unless you count this forum and mumble/steam) for like 3-4 years now tbh. It's probably not good for you but it's not like it's gonna heal all your problems if you dont use it (which I feel like is what some people think)

I've been watching Tiktoks secondhand through youtube and realized that the difference between it and Vine is that with Vines I liked them so much that I would watch them over and over but with Tiktoks I hate them so much that I watch them over and over.

Is it the memes that bother you and the fact that everybody recycles the same music?

It's just less funny than vine.  There are no jokes, it's just people making silly faces.

Yeah I hear you lot leaving fb . I'm going to get one of those blocker things. Half of it don't care for, the other half are friends I could be seeing, and yeah, then the token gorgeous girl talking about herself .

And shit tons of politics. And cat videos

Mehbook. I even open it with an excuse 'to see what's going on' that's bs I just want to socialise. Get out and do it then, dummy.

I have got a slight excuse as I'm out of town, but as soon as I'm moved in to London fb is going away bigtime. I'll use RA for my clubbing info.

FB gives me the feeling now that you’re talking to an empty room when posting. I can see it sort of resembling MySpace eventually, but still retaining a huge global user base. It depends on the country, I guess. But the shine is wearing off, at least in regions that realize the abuse they’re perpetrating, and the massive influence of disinformation they’ve been an accessory to.

I've never posted much on Facebook but have been skimming the news feed daily. My Facebook news feed was quite vibrant and entertaining 10 years ago but now it is increasingly becoming like a ghost town, as more and more people either close their accounts or stop posting. It definitely feels like it's following the death trajectory of MySpace.
